What Colour Is Best?

Featured Replies

Hi, hoping somebody could offer some advice.

I am hoping to get some photographs taken of myself and my fiance as a present for my Mum. I am just wondering if there is a rule about the colour we should wear considering that he has beautiful dark skin and mine is considerably whiter. I always feel that I appear even whiter than normal when we have shots together, are there colours that each of us should wear that will compliment the both of us? Do we wear the same colour, different colours, it doesn't matter?? I've no idea....

any advice would be great

I am asuming you want a relatively conservative "timeless" portrait for mum, rather than a modern fashion statement.

Select similar colours they create better look, you can go for contrasts but be carefull. Depending on your lifestyle, casual or formal clothes. You are trying to create a portrait that shows off you not the clothes you are wearing.

Casual, jeans and light tops, chambre or some thing button up, not Tshirt. Unless you are thin and have well mucled arms, wear long sleeve shirts. If your lifestyle is out door and active you can get away from some of this. You probably don't want a hot and sweaty look though.

If you are worried about difference in skin colour, wear make-up. Have someone experienced apply photographic make-up, it is different from normal day to day or evening make-up in that it usually heavier. It is important if you are being photographed under lights. Have your fiance get a light amount of powder to reduce shine due to skin oilyness, this will keep the colour difference without a shine that looks sweaty. Also have the makeup feathered to the collar, some make-up people stop part way down the neck and it looks like a tide mark.

To get an idea of what I mean, look at a lot of wedding photos. The bride is made up and looks stunning and the groom is shining because of the oil on his skin. In some weddings you can see where the make-up stops. :o

Not needed. Wear loose clothing and hide behind the fiance in the posing.

It works better for the lighting any way. Where possible put the dark skin person closer to the light source. The final result looks better. :o

Your mum will love you for you. When you lose the weight do it again to show off how good you have been.

I'm quite pale, and my wife is quite dark - we wore black and white for our pics. I wore a white shirt with a black tie, she wore a white suit with a black shirt - the photos were stunning - even more surprising when you consider that I was in them.

Be careful with makeup, I had a friend with really pale skin and he had so much makeup on that he was a sort of fawn colour when he did his pictures!
