First of the new Bangkok buses expected to come into service in January

BANGKOK, 15 August 2014 (NNT) – The first of the thousands of new buses for commuters in Bangkok are expected to be put into service in January next year, according to the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA).

Prani Sukrason, a BMTA board of directors member, said on Thursday that details of the procurement project for 3,183 new compressed natural gas buses have been finalized, and the procurement will be made via an auction in September.

The reference price for the air-conditioned buses has been set at 4.5 million baht per vehicle and that for normal buses at 3.8 million baht.

The procurement contract is expected to be made in October, and the first of the buses will be delivered in January. All of the buses will be delivered within 2015.

The new NGV-powered buses will conform to the Euro 3 standard. There will be 30 seats on the air-conditioned buses and 35 seats on the hot or normal buses.

All of the new buses will have low floor to improve passenger comfort and accessibility by the handicapped. Each bus will also be fitted with GPS tracking, closed circuit cameras and a system for electronic tickets.

Ms. Prani asserted that although the BMTA was making the massive purchase, ticket prices will not be increased.

And send the old busses to the crusher.
I was sitting next to one bus yesterday and noticed 4 nuts were missing from the front wheel and the tyre had chunk missing from the tread bigger than your hand.
I was sitting behind it but i was getting smoked out buy the black exhaust so moved to the side
a system for electronic tickets.

No more conductors than?

bad news is fares will be doubled to pay for it. Would rather stick with the old clangers and low prices, never had a problem....

If anybody is looking for more details on this, there is a great thread running over at the 2bangkok web forum.  Search for "BMTA NGV Bus Plan" and skip to the last page.

It sounds like due to time constaints, a few hundred busses will be imported from China while the rest will be built in Thailand.

will they have brakes that work.

DO they come with built in flowers handging from the mirror and that special graphiti that keeps vehicles safe.

Stupid garbage replies.  They will be brand new busses.

The local Benz dealer, massage girls and Black Label distributors will be happy.

And send the old busses to the crusher.

I don't believe so, they will repaint them and create a new line in a color they don't have yet, to make sure that the Bangkok traffic is even more congested.
