What madness is this? They are requiring that I bring my passport to customs in Chiang mai so that Bangkok will release the $150 phone on it's way to my house in Lamphun.

I have received many imported things before. Mostly electronics. Phones etc... Is this something new? Or am I just lucky to not have had to do this before now....

Not all the unusual to have to bring your original passport to clear Customs, they want to make sure you are you before they release the package, as well as get the money.

Customs is a lottery here in Thailand, you just got lucky in the past and unlucky this time

Okay. Great. No problem then. This is literally the 8th phone or so I've had imported over the years. Never had this happen before. Just wanted to make sure their request was par for the course. Regards.

Where you say "paid taxes", do you mean he might have paid shipto extra to cover import duty or did you mean the VAT? I know some shipping companies allow you to add in expected customs charges into the shipping fee and the shipping company pays the customs. Of course when it comes to DHL, they are doing an outstanding job in doing the customs paperwork and collecting customs/duties for the Thai govt...that's why they can zip things through customs so fast....DHL is probably 10 times more efficient in collecting customs than the Customs dept is in directly doing it.

By taxes I mean %7 vat and 214 baht service fee. There is no duties / customs tax for mobile phones, only VAT.
