Guys, I normally use a D-Link modem /router WIFI to two android devices, a laptop and a desktop . The laptop runs Win7 and the Desktop runs Win8.

I have been trying an Asus DSL-N55U, set it up okay and using it on the 2.4GHz band on all the above devices. Then, after a couple of hours I lost the WIFI signal to the Desktop PC that I was using.

I know that there is a heat problem with N55Us so decided to leave it until next day and changed back to the D-Link , WIFI was fine . I dont know if there was a loss of WIFI signal to the other devices, didnt check.

Now, today the laptop and android devices see the N55U fine but my Desktop doesnt see it, and a scanner program running on the desktop doesnt see it either. I have positioned the N55U within a meter of the Desktop PC, the other devices work fine anywhere in the house.

The N55U will connect via a LAN cable to the desktop, I can ping the router and also connect to the internet (via the LAN). When I change back to the D-Link the Desktop sees the WIFI signal and connects. Im puzzled!!

Two things I can suggest you try:

1. Reset the WiFi encryption type the router uses. Best if you set it to either WPA or WPA2 (not WPA/WPA2), and use AES only, (not AES/TKIP).

2. On the Win8 PC, Open Network and Sharing Center and enter Manage Wireless Networks (or whatever the Win8 equivalent is). Delete the entry for the N55U

This is primarily an issue with your Win8 PC.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction ... the problem is very very low power on the 2.4GHz channel. My desktops WIFI card won't see 5GHz whereas the other 3 devices will.

What type of WiFi adapter does your Desktop PC use?

Desktops produce a lot of RF interference and the metal case can block WiFi signals.

It's best if you have either an internal WiFi adapter with external antenna that can be located away from the computer case,

or use an external USB WiFi adapter connected to an extension cable to get it away from the metal case.

TP-Link sells a USB WiFi adapter that has an external antenna and a corded cradle that I used to connect to a WiFi station 200 meters distant.

Thanks Guys

I haven’t looked at the manufactures website for the latest driver but Device Manager tells me that the latest driver is installed. The Desktop PC picks up the D-Link WIFI 2.4GHz signal from the next room with no problem.

To clarify … the Desktop PC did initially work on the 2.4GHz signal from the N55U but the signal died after a couple of hours use.

I should also have added that this morning I moved the N55U into the room next to my laptop and with the N55U about two feet from my laptop I got a 2.4GHz connection but only 1-2 bars.

I googled my Desktop WIFI card and it definitely isn't 5GHz rated I also tried to update the N55U firmware, but failed. There is a built in program to do that and it said 'updated firmware is available, do you want to do update? The program ran through and said completed but it still showed the same firmware revision.

Also the android devices wouldn't see the N55U 2.4GHz signal even for a couple of feet away.

A renowned computer expert (from this forum) has very kindly offered to have a look at my problem this coming weekend, his initial opinion is that as the router is wedged shaped it could be used as a door stop!. I'll update you, thanks for suggestions and trying to help.

Sounds like a disconnected antenna cable.

The three antennas really should all be in the same plane (normally all pointed straight UP).

The antenna alignment in the first image is just a marketing pose.

All that means is that it has the latest driver available through Microsoft Update.

If you check the vendor's site you can often find a later one.

This would be the first thing I'd do.

If you want to do it the easy way, try slimdrivers.

I keep wondering WHY people don't like using the ThaiVisa search, or Google search for that matter. And why you would ask on the back end of a WiFi connection issue boggles the mind.

This question seems to be posted at least once every other month and the threads have lots of feedback on the question that is difficult to answer until you arrive and see what service your area of choice offers.
