morrobay
maybe stopping the erosion would be easier and cheaper then replacing the beach every year? the whole thing has been sandbagged so all the drainage is down the steps and thru the beach, washing large amounts of sand out past the low tide mark whenever it floods, and interestingly undermining the 100 foot high prison lights, so it may get interesting. so anyway, the tractors will be out soon and they will level the beach, but sadly the missing sand is out beyond the reach of the tractors so the beach will drop another meter or so this year. personally I like it 15 Sept update:After heavy rain there are major gully washouts - erosion 2m deep 5-7 M wide in front of all the steps because of above ^. From about Central up to Soi 3 . In fact these steps are undermined and on verge of collapsing along with one area near Soi 6 that has collapsed. The breakwater wall is also exposed and undermined along this segment. And this is all before the longshore current changes direction ( North to South ) At this rate I expect parts of the walkway in this area, Soi 3 to Central, to collapse Edited September 15, 2014 by morrobay

Felixthecat
Its good to read they're doing something about it, though swimming in it is another story....shame really. At least its a nice walk since they widen the path-way

morrobay
Without a civil engineer specializing in beach erosion/restoration (from the U.S., Australia or Europe) this throwing sandbags at the problem is a lost cause. That beach is going fast and its going to take parts of that slapped on seawall and walkway with it, as well as one or two of those very high lamp posts that are recently dangerously undermined. Apart from stabilizing the lamp posts maybe they should just forget about it. From the majority users Im seeing there now : Large groups of Thais drinking , foreigners sitting around smoking cigarettes all day, and the busloads of cattle shuttle-bused Chinese and Indians to the boats. All are oblivious to their surroundings anyway. Edited September 16, 2014 by morrobay
thaivisaismylife
Hello, did they bring trucks of sands as planed ? Or nothing changed ? Thanks.
phycokiller
Hello, did they bring trucks of sands as planed ? Or nothing changed ? Thanks. apparently they couldnt find any suitable sand and gave up on the idea, or maybe thats a cryptic way of saying they had already spent the money, anyway I think they have given up in the meantime
Asiantravel
Resolving the beach problems in Pattaya will be an ongoing matter ..........maybe forever it's like painting Sydney Harbour Bridge. It takes so long that when they reach the end they go back to the start and do it all over again
nev
Best thing they could do is demolish the road and make the beach bigger.
berybert
Hello, did they bring trucks of sands as planed ? Or nothing changed ? Thanks. No trucks where needed. They found sand hiding under the water. Now they just need to find a way to stop the water from covering it up.
morrobay
Hello, did they bring trucks of sands as planed ? Or nothing changed ? Thanks. It seems the only result of this "project" is permanent installation of one sorry mess of construction trailers at South end of Beach walk just above entrance to Walking st

mcfish
They could start with chopping down all those annoying trees just like in jomtien
Awohalitsiktoli
They could start with chopping down all those annoying trees just like in jomtien But they already did. Pattaya beach, in the 60s-90s was lush with old-growth trees (I was not here in the 60s or 70s, but was told this by "old timers" and old pictures reveal this). They really started mass cutting in the 2000s.......the latest beach development simply cut down almost all of the remaining trees. The trees that they cut down are salt tolerant and are "experts" at preventing beach erosion. It is hard to believe that in 2016 there is a collective mindset in Thailand that does not see the value of trees.......amazing Thailand indeed. Of course, part of the solution is planting as many trees (the same species that they cut down) as possible along the beachfront.
johng
When they started the Jomtien "facelift" and chopped down a lot of old trees at the Dongtan police box end there was quite a stir on Thai facebook pages, eventually a meeting was called at city hall and they agreed that no more would be removed..not that there are very many left now.... but at least some Thais where trying to stop it. A glimmer of hope. Certainly future generations will wonder why they cut down the trees that made the beaches in this area so special and helped mitigate beach erosion. The people who made the decision to cut down the old-growth trees can still take steps to correct the problem they have created--plant twice as many trees as they cut down, and not palm trees which have little impact on beach erosion and provide almost no shade.
