NARATHIWAT, Sept 15 -- Train services which were temporarily suspended Friday due to insurgent bomb damaged track resumed early today, railway officials said.

They said the first passenger train resumed service at 6.30am, leaving Sungai Kolok station for Surat Thani amid tight security provided by police and security volunteers along the rail route.

Passenger services earlier could travel as far as Sungai Kolok district in Narathiwat province after track at Tanyongmas railway station was damaged by insurgent bombs.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan told journalists that he ordered agencies under the permanent secretary for defence to tighten security services.

Gen Prawit said he would call a meeting of security-related government agencies within two or three days.

The discussion would focus on how agencies could cooperate in their work and reduce crime.

Positive results must be seen within the next two to three months, said Gen Prawit, resulting in the people having more confidence.

Regarding violence in the deep South, he said the caretaker government is discussing details of upcoming peace talks with the insurgents.

He said Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has given policy on building peace in every area of the country.

Thawil Pliensri, secretary-general of National Security Council, has not yet provided a progress report on peace negotiations with the insurgents, Gen Prawit added. (MCOT online news)
