Car-free Day: Silom Road to close
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Silom Road will be closed to traffic till 6am tomorrow as part of the annual Bangkok Car Free Day events.

To mark the occasion, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has joined hands with 87 organisations to promote the use of public transport and bicycles via various activities today.

Among them is a bicycle parade that is expected to be attended by more than 20,000 people.

The parade will start from Sanam Luang at around 8am before heading to Silom Road via Rajdamnoen Avenue, Royal Plaza, Si Ayutthaya Road and Rajprarop Road.

For more traffic information, call 1197.

The BMA and its allies have recognised the need for Bangkok residents and motorists to cut down on the use of cars.

Statistics show there are now more than 8.55 million cars in Bangkok.

The BMA Traffic and Transport Department has found that traffic flows at an average speed of just 26km/h on Bangkok's main roads.

It is estimated that Bangkok motorists spend a total of Bt126 million on petrol each day.

How will all the VIPs attending get there i wonder ?

A minor blip on the massive gridlock of bangkok . One sunday will do nothing. Needs far more restrictions and central Bangkok car tax alongside greater mrt bts coverage. the speed things are done here it will take a generation.

I hope they're able to provide sufficient car parking for the 20,000 expected to attend the bicycle parade. I mean, they'll all drive there with the bike hanging out the back of their cars won't they?

No! They'll all be crowded onto the Skytrain making a nuisance of themselves amongst the pedestrian passengers --- as usual.
