Will Grab Taxi app ever hit Phuket

Featured Replies

So its operational in BKK and just launched in Pattaya .

It would be just what the doctor ordered if it arrived here. But will it ever happen ?

Thoughts please .....

It might happen, but then again maybe not.

In Chiang Rai (so I am assuming the same in a number of other locations) you can get the telephone # of several taxi companies and then call them and have them pick you up.

I think they charge 30B for the pickup. Usually they come in 10-15 minutes depending on the time of day or night.

Even if your Thai is quite limited you can usually make out fine, as either the dispatcher or actual driver can speak a bit of "taxi English",

I used these services from my very first week in CR and made out ok.

Good to be able to speak your address in Thai, which does not even involved making a complete sentence. Also good if you can say in Thai where you want to go to. But again, you can say "Central" and they know you want to go to the mall.

Happy it works for you in CR but Phuket is a totally different animal when it comes to taxis & all public transport. The whole system is ruled by greed & corruption & despite the show of cleaning it up it appears nothing has really changed in terms of service & pricing. It i sto be hoped that systems like Grab & Uber could make it better but even then who knows as prices could still be set at a high rate.

UBER Phuket https://www.uber.com/cities/phuket

Base fare ฿140.00 + ฿2.50 per minute + ฿20.00 Per kilometer

Min fare Cancellation fee

฿180.00 ฿180.00

Anywhere in Phuket

Phuket Airport

฿950.00

***

UBER Bangkok

Base fare ฿45.00 + ฿2.50 per minute + ฿9.20 Per kilometer

Min fare Cancellation Fee

฿75.00 ฿75.00

We pay around 140 to 200 baht for Grab a taxi in Pattaya area , only for short rides within 6 kms.

I still think its too much compared to Bangkok.
