BANGKOK: -- Bangkok's Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University plans a further investigation into a hazing ceremony in which freshmen suffered burns from candle wax.

The story emerged in Thai social media. University president Luedech Kerdwichai said he was sorry about the incident and apologised to the affected students and their parents.

He said an initial investigation found that some senior students poured candle wax on freshmen of the faculty of industrial technology early this month, after the deadline for hazing ceremonies ended on August 30. He confirmed the probe would find out who was involved and the case would be explained to the Higher Education Commission later.

Sam Sen Police superintendent Pol Colonel Monchai Sriprasert said a 19-year-old female student had filed a complaint on September 28 that she sustained the injury on September 4.

An unnamed student source at the faculty said the candle-wax burning was part of a blessing ceremony, not a hazing, and had been performed on many past generations.

They strive to be Western in some respects (the idiot aspects), then fail in all others (the worthwhile ones).

If the unnamed student is in any way accurate this has been going on for a very long time yet it seems the uni knew nothing !

ThaiVisa poster nonsense-ness.

Stupid student hazing ceremony.

I'll kick any senior's ass and stuff cake up his/her face no matter how senior they are, and how freshman I am. Every human being has the same rights as one another, no one is superior to any.

Those who haven't gotten into university yet and reading this. Do not bow down to any senior, if anyone dares to try to do anything to you, they should be prepared to be done onto them. Do not let this stupid seniors think they have absolute power. Power is only taken if you let them. Stand your ground.

And a Thai Visa troll response

There are sick people all over the world.

So this would have been acceptable if they had done it prior to the deadline??

The girl has been scarred for life, how is this a team building welcome to a university?? Hazing should be banned and anyone involved kicked out from top to bottom!

Cheap candle wax will leave scars... obviously this lot are too stupid or tight to use a quality wax

It's all good. The rector has apologised and the students are remorseful

The rector Mr Luedech Kerdwichai vowed to take disciplinary probe into 40 senior students who allegedly dripped candle wax that caused burns on a girl freshmen from the industrial technology faculty.

He said those responsible are likely to be put on probation, but not dismissal as it was too heavy to fire the 40 senior students.

Rector apologises but no dismissal of guilty seniors http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/rector-apologises-dismissal-guilty-seniors/

"An unnamed student source at the faculty said the candle-wax burning was part of a blessing ceremony, not a hazing, and had been performed on many past generations."

So, because it was part of a ceremony and had been done for years, that makes it ok?

Hazing is nothing more than violence and thuggery posing under BS tradition claims.
