BANGKOK: -- ARMY PARAMILITARY rangers have seized 4,000 amphetamine tablets and a number of firearms after engaging in a gunfight in Chiang Rai with drug couriers, who fled the scene.

The gunfight, which involved about 10 members of a drug caravan, took place on Sunday. Police later apprehended three men with gunshot wounds at a local hospital the next day, and would interview them to find out whether they were part of the drug caravan.

On Sunday night, a team from the 3108th rangers company detected movement of drug caravans in a stakeout at a border crossing in Mae Sai district. The men, likely belonging to hilltribes across the border, opened fire when told to stop.

The rangers returned fire in a five-minute shootout, before the men appeared to withdraw. The rangers waited until dawn to clear the area and found out all the men were gone, and left the 4,000 tablets at the scene along with an assault rifle and a home-made short shotgun.

In another operation yesterday morning, soldiers and police jointly arrested a man at Tachilek checkpoint who had in his possession a 380-gram bar of heroin. There are no details about the identity or nationality of the suspect, who is now in custody of Mae Sai police in Thailand.

The rifle/shotgun (???) on the table has an exposed hammer....in the Western countries they went out of favour 75 80 90 100 years ago. Are these home made by the hill tribes?

In Mexico, Central and South America, the drug lords use the latest military weapons (automatic firearms, rockets and other explosives, etc.), airplanes, even submarines. Here, one of the weapons appears to be a flintlock or something almost as old.

This looks like another cheap knockoff. This time it's of a farang drug cartel.

yes they use flintlocks... i have seen them with my own eyes...

I can vouch for that, too. My x-girlfriend's dad used to hunt with one in Pai, Mae Hong Son. Single shot.

Lol Those are Muskits, single shot ball rifles. They still sell them in America but who knows were these nuts got them.

Yep .50 caliber. Parts are available at our local HomePro in Pai.

Bird guns, they have small caliber muzzle-loader flint gun or .22 cartridge used to shoot birds or small animals....the hill tribes use them all the time.

Except the Automatic rifle in the middle of the picture...

I hope they didn't turn it over to the police.

I see those long guns daily here in the northern mountains of Thailand. Oddly enough only in the protected wildlife areas? Figure that one out.
