Php Nuke

Hi,

I have just changed hosting provider and was playing around with the admin options.

I noticed a CMS called PHP Nuke and installed it.

INstallation was easy and I was accessing the administration very quickly.

However, I was immediately stumped when I wanted to change the logo and basic navigation.... it was all based on themes and deep inside the code was the option to change the navigation...... of course, i changed it and then nothing worked.

Can anyone recommend an open-source CMS system or should I stick with PHp Nuke>?

PHP Nuke is quite vulnerable to hack attacks and the code is horrible to work with if you want to change something (IMHO).

Try XOOPS instead. It is a derivative of nuke written in a more object oriented way, very robust, easy to use and the developers are pretty keen on security, community support is pretty good.

Documentation is available including a guide to editing the xoops themes.

I use Drupal for all the websites I create. It's got a bit higher barrier to entry, but it's much more professional and well designed. Great community as well with tons of modules that you can hook in to do all kinds of things.

I also recommend Joomla, and to a lesser extent Drupal. I find Joomla easier to work with, but your experience may be different. It's important to get the latest version - 1.0.10 I believe - the previous versions had a very large security hole.

or, if you're looking for a blog-type site, install WordPress.

Go for Joomla >> Check our footie site: http://www.sunbeltunited.com

Thanks guys,

I have had some time to check out your recommendations and I think that Joomla is the way to go!

By any chance did any of you buy the book? I like to RTFM as much as I can and if you could sell me your book I would appreciate it......

It's all down to personal preference of course, but I find the default Joomla themes ugly as hel_l, and good luck finding a nice one for free - most theme sites want your money. Drupal has several nice free themes, and Wordpress has thousands. I've never touched XOOPS, but PostNuke/PHPNuke are to be avoided at all costs in my opinion.

Buying a book for any software, CMS or otherwise, seems to me an odd thing to do. All the documentation, tutorials etc are freely available online, and will be updated every time a new version is released - whereas your hard-copy book will be obsolete before you finish reading it in some cases :o

Cheaper to just print out the documentation if you must have a hard copy - especially here in Thailand.

OK - i have downloaded and installed joomla on my domain.

It says installation is easy but it is far from easy!

I had many problems with permissions, security and now with paths.

I am getting this error and cant get past it!

Warning: main(/home/public_html/includes/version.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/geroreil/public_html/includes/joomla.php on line 71

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required '/home/public_html/includes/version.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/geroreil/public_html/includes/joomla.php on line 71

For those of you who are using joomla - can you help or point me in the right direction.

thanks

Did I mention that XOOPS is better? Or that it has an Installation guide and operations guide? For god's sake man stop taking drugs and download XOOPs immediately!

Hi, my experience is that when you are just starting out with using these cms's, Joomla has great looks, yet is also pretty complicated.

When I started using OS CMS's, I found Drupal (and to a lesser extend XOOPS, yet I also prefer XOOPS over Joomla (for starters) to be very intuitive, and it will help you understand the fundamentals of such applications easier.

Drupal standard installation comes without loads of fancy modules, yet there are countless available that you can use to make about any kind of website.

Once you have got that understanding, I do suggest giving Joomla a try.

User reviews, ratings of many CMS's, and other applications, alternatives and loads of information: http://www.opensourcecms.com/

The best thing about XOOPS though is that there is some truly amazing and brilliant documentation available for Installing and Operating XOOPS, I have heard about that somewhere, does anyone have a clue and or can anyone send a link to that :-)

Hope this helps!

As far as this error is concerned, and from what I can tell from your messages, in your upload it seems that you've somewhere included a directory "geroreil" in the installation, that is not configured properly. your "version.php" is apparently NOT in a sub-directory of "geroreil". (again, this is just based on what's in your message)

A standard installation (easiest to start off with) will have a directory structure like this:

your server root - usually "public_html", in your case I think it is, or it is "home", in which case you shouldn't have used "public_html".

under that your joomla directory, e.g. "Joomla"

under that on the same level "administrator", "cache", "components", "editor" etc. etc.

Visit the joomla online forum for more detailed help on any Joomla issues: http://forum.joomla.org/

Good luck again!

Can someone please explain to the uninitiated,

What you guys are talking about?

Thanks

Surely. CMS - its a content management system, designed for laizy yahoos to have their websites look less ugly by great folks with programming knowledge.

In fact, if you look at most advanced system such as www.subdreamer.com you'll notice greate look and bloody fast-to-install so called "engine" - the heart of the CMS, that makes pages appear according to your request.

Now, what guys are talking about is "cheap charlie" versions , a.k.a. Open Source, a.k.a. Free management systems, and as everything free of charge, they compare each one ...

Got a picture ?
