khunjamesjohnson
The jet ski scam has become a tourist attraction. Many people like to sit on the steps at Mikes Mall and watch the extortion/assaults. Thai culture.
morrobay
He said tourists from key markets such as Russia, China, Japan, India and Europe would shift to other destinations such as Phuket, Koh Samui and other beach resorts. - wonderful news, thank you They might be going to Vietnam too. On the Central mainland coast there you dont have to travel to islands for clear water.
morrobay
Don't panic. Tourists will soon start flocking back when Pattaya's city fathers' vow to transform their seething sex tourist capital into a respectable family resort becomes a squeaky-clean reality.I lived in Pattaya during the good old days when all the hotels were full and everybody was happy. I think you are mistaken. The area got too family friendly and the punters all left. What years were that ?

JDGRUEN
What i don't understand: If Thailand wants more Tourists, why then they do everything to scare off the Tourists? But the tourists will have their mandatory ID bracelets ... and 'minders' to take them around... so tourists will be flocking back...
Jackson86
i don't think over-supply of rooms is an issue, but rather the main reasons for decline in pattaya tourists are the current political landscape and the crime rates there.

slygeeza
reading the travel and booking site reviews I get the impression that the main issue for tourists is the rubbish in the sea and on the beaches. it wouldnt be difficult to keep the beaches clean, there are several cheap ways to do it, one very simple way would be to make the umbrella people keep their areas of the beach clean, as I believe is written into their contracts. it would be to their advantage but unfortunately they dont have the necessary comprehension. since they are too lazy to do it you would think it would be in beach front hotels interest to pay someone a few hundred baht a week to keep the areas in front of their hotels clean, but they dont get it either. In any case Im sure that many tourists come one time and then the next year go elsewhere looking for less polluted beaches and never return again. its just laziness thats losing them business and they only have themselves to blame Edited October 11, 2014 by slygeeza

All of the other attractions other than Tiffany's are largely generic to thousands of other resorts in the world. Golf courses, restaurants bla bla. There are better restaurants and golf courses without having to travel to pattaya.

Its both: An increasing - oversupply of hotel rooms + a decreasing - decline of tourists. When oil goes down below $85/barrow you wont see many Russians around too. And eventually I think the Chinese are going to Vietnam. Much nicer mainland beaches and a more similar culture.
