RT @RichardBarrow: UK government has updated their travel advisory for #Thailand following the "vicious, unprovoked attack" on Koh Tao: https://t.co/gpvOkTxIRY

Crime

Western tourists including British nationals have been victims of vicious, unprovoked attacks by individuals and gangs in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (the Samui archipelago). For example, in January 2013 a British national was killed in a shooting incident while at a beach party in Haad Rin on Koh Phanang and in September 2014 two British nationals were killed in Tao.

Violent sexual assaults and robberies against both men and women are reported regularly in the Koh Samui archipelago and Krabi province and are particularly common during the monthly Full Moon parties and generally occur late at night near bars.

Tourists have also been robbed after bringing visitors to their hotel rooms. In some cases their drinks were drugged. Be careful about taking drinks from strangers and at clubs and parties, particularly in Koh Samui, Pattaya and at the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan, where date rapes have been reported.

Attacks have also occurred in other tourist districts in Thailand including Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Krabi. In light of the risk of unprovoked attacks you should be cautious and take care, especially at night.

Thailand’s participation at the 7th Bali Democracy Forum

BANGKOK, 12 October 2014 (NNT) – Mr. Manasvi Srisodapol, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed to the 7th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) that Thailand remains fully committed to democracy, a democracy that is based on good governance, accountability, rule of law, and human rights.

The BDF was held on October 10 in Bali, Indonesia, under the theme ‘Evolving Regional Democratic Architecture: The Challenges of Political Development, Public Participation, and Socio-Economic Progress in the 21st Century”. It was attended by delegates from 85 countries in the Asia-Pacific region as well as Europe and America, including four at the heads of state and heads of government level and 14 at the ministerial level.

Manasvi also updated all delegates about the political developments in Thailand since last year, from which the turmoil and series of events have developed and made military intervention necessary. However, he reaffirmed that Thailand remains fully committed to democracy based on good governance, accountability, rule of law, and human rights.

He also informed the delegates that Thailand was in transition and currently working on reforms and reconciliation aiming to put the country back on track towards a strong democracy.

He also reiterated the importance that countries in the region could lend each other a helping hand to encourage a smooth transition to a more sustainable democracy. This could help shape the evolving regional democratic architecture which is beneficial to everyone.

The BDF was initiated in 2008 by Professor Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, with an aim to promote cooperation and dialogue that would lead to political and democratic developments in the region. The BDF discussion was based on openness, constructive debate, and sharing of experiences.
