Sky lantern ban remains in place during Loy Krathong

BANGKOK, 15 October 2014 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will this year continue to impose a ban on sky lanterns during the Loy Krathong Festival next month.

The BMA said a series of fires and other accidents caused by sky lanterns have been reported last year. A stricter ban will be implemented to prevent more future fire hazards.

50 district offices across Bangkok have been instructed to especially ban residents from floating lanterns into the sky near the Royal Palace, Rama VIII Bridge and other crowded areas. Those who violate the ban will face a jail sentence and a fine up to 2,000 baht at maximum.

A new draft law prohibiting the use of lanterns is being considered among relevant agencies in a bid to ensure safety and order across the kingdom.

I remember when the residents on the edge of Swampybum put some lanterns in the air as a protest against the officials , who had promised them xxxxx baht for noise and inconvenience compensation , and never coughed up.
