GPS Bluetooth receiver for laptop?

Featured Replies

Years ago, I had a Palm Treo phone with Windows for Mobile on it. (Still have it, hoping it will be a collectible one day)

I bought a Garmin based GPS receiver with Bluetooth to communicate with the Palm. Worked like a champ, even back in the stone age of Palm. The receiver had no display, just an on-off button. It also allowed me to plug in a 10' magnetic antenna so I could toss the antenna on the roof of the car and get a great signal almost anywhere- even in the city. The Palm was the display.

Now, I'd like to get a GPS receiver with Bluetooth that can be used with my Win 8.1 Laptop. Preferably using Google Earth or some other open source (pronounced "free") base map. Still, I'm not worried about spending reasonable money for a package system that work in Thailand.

Any recommendations?

BTW, still have the Palm GPS Bluetooth receiver, but it keeps asking for a password to pair with my laptop. I have long since lost and forgotten any passwords that came with it. Any easy fixes for that?

Thanks in advance.

For the Bluetooth pairing password, try 0000

Don't know any free GPS navigation map for a laptop computer.

Thanks for that, Maestro!

0000 was the answer to step 1. It installed on COM4. (BTW, the receiver unit came packaged with Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile- I can't imagine they don't sell something similar for Win 8)

Now to figure out Step 2...

I'm not actually looking for navigation software. I have a dashboard Garmin and smartphones for that. I'm looking for a way to overlay my location onto a base map or topo for when I'm traveling by train or van. The screens on the GPS and phones are not very satisfying for a map nerd. I'd gladly spring for something like DeLorme if they published a base map of Thailand.

Google Earth is a distant second choice because it requires a decent interweb connection. Right now, I'm toying with the realtime GPS tool tab on GE, but not getting any luv, even at home.

I use Global Mapper (now ver 16) for PC. It's not free but can be from the interweb. With it can use online or offline topographic maps of any description with a GPS signal on top.

Do a Google search for smartphone emulator for PC and see if this gives you any useful information. I've never tried it; the idea got into my head just now.

I found a free program called goops that meets my basic needs. It accepts data from my (now Bluetooth connected- thanks Maestro) GPS receiver and plots my location on Google Earth in real time.

The interface seems a little klunky, but (as Dan Akroyd asked) "What do you want for nothing...?" Now I need to figure out how to cache some real estate in Google Earth or Google maps so I don't need an interweb connection for it to work.

Then it will be time to take it on the road or the rails, as I've only tested it with the receiver on my balcony.

In the meantime, I'm still open to a more commercial ($$) solution- similar to what's available from DeLorme and others- but for Thailand...

I use Easy Google Maps Downloader (now ver 7.14) to save a map or satellite image tiles offline. It is also not free but easily found on torrent.

Another useful free Windows program I sometimes use (tho I prefer Global Mapper) is called OKMap found at their free site okmap.org.

Personally for on the road scouting I use an Android device with free Orux mapping software that does all this.

Dang. I hate it when I find out I'm not even asking the right question...
