...is running a bit 'rough' for the past 500 kilometers or so. There's a (slight) vibration when no load on the engine and it sounds and feels more ragged under way. It's 8 years old with 100,000 kms on the clock. The truck has only been used on the 'farm' upcountry and was always serviced on schedule by the dealer in Chantaburi--even after the warranty ended. No problems whatsoever until now...

I'm not familiar with the 'newer' electronic-based engines (not really that new a design, lol)--my experience pretty much ended with installing new point, plugs, condenser and setting up with a timing light--yeah, I'm a dinosaurrolleyes.gif...

Anyway, is it possible to do an 'electronic tune-up' ???The local garage garage doesn't have the proper diagnostic (electronic) tools and recommended I visit the Ford dealer on the mainland. I'm also wondering about what method would be needed to check the valve timing ??? Any advice would be appreciated...

Our 3 litre Ranger developed a tickover vibration at about the same mileage, it was accompanied by what sounded like timing chain rattle (it has a belt).

Turned out to be the dual-mass flywheel, 15 grand from Ford. Had a clutch at the same time although it still had some meat on it.

It also had its second set of prop-spiders and centre bearing along with a timing belt and tensioner, may as well get it all over with whilst it's in dock.

Scary bill, but it was done by the main dealer. Noise and vibration free smile.png

That ranger sould definately not need any work like that at 100k. Timing belt at 160k and some other things at the ssme time but nothing major.universal joints and clutch? Has been abused? My 2005 vigo had no issues at 140k when i sold it. Not even 1 rattle!

Our problems were at about 130K.

The prop bearings and spiders are a known failure, not helped by being driven through the floods.

Dual mass flywheels are also known issues with Ford diesels.

A 100,000km is nothing for a diesel, absolutely nothing.............Just run in...........Do you want to argue about that.....?

Nope, no argument about that, but that is not what you meant with your first reaction in this thread.

I think Ford many years ago employed a bunch of ex-Massey Ferguson mechanical engineers to do their diesel work. Even the newish 2.2 has MF sounds!

Strangely, 2 people who both have Vigos and one now has a brand new Chevy (also a poster on this thread so can confirm) have commented on how much more refined my 2.5 Ranger engine sounds compared to theirs.

Massey-Ferguson? You are too kind sir. They were from Massey-Harris.

KISS. Has the fuel filter been changed regularly ? First off have the injectors cleaned. Does it have EGR ? Clean that too and make sure all vacuum hoses are in good shape.

My Ranger 2.5 TD rattles a bit but to be fair it is only 13 years old with 311,xxx on the clock.

It can still get wheel spin if I try and I still get an overall mileage of 12.5 km/ltr.

The 2.5L was a Mazda design....wasn't it?

The new 2,2L is a strange beast if the across the road neighbour's one is anything to go by. Some days he starts it and it sounds like a big tin of marbles are having an epileptic fit under the bonnet and other days it sounds like any other diesel! Weird!
