Friend wants to return to Thailand...

Featured Replies

So this isn't the usual type of question, but,

I have a Thai friend, he is around 29, hasn't been back since he was 18, he's concerned about returning, especially now the military are in charge - because he never went in for the draft (he was overseas) we (a group of us) are heading to Chang Mai for a friends wedding, he is really keen to go, but he's worried if he lands his passport will have an alert and he'll get made to do 5 years service.

Some Thai friends have said he will be fine unless dobbed in, others have said that they have it flagged on passports now...

Anyone have any experience?

Cheers.

Unless registered in Thailand on a tabien baan he is not called for the draft. Avoiding the draft is not flagged with immigration.

His exact age is importent as when he turns 30 he is not callled for the draft anymore. He still has to register for it and be fined something like 500 baht for not doing it earlyer, but that is it.

Your Thai friend will be fine. He is clearly quite mad to have lived abroad and not in his wonderful homeland for the last eleven years. Those of unsound mind are not drafted at any age.

My stepson was in a similar situation, except that he left Thailand when only about 7. While still in his teens he became a naturalized US citizen (at the same time as my wife). He has only visited Thailand twice since leaving as a child, once when he was about 20 and later on when he was in his thirties. I remember that the wife's family was concerned about the draft issue, but he had no problems on either visit.

Its crap, there are Many of young Thai men that have not reported for the (draft) lottery (I know of one personally in my village). When in conversation with locals as to what happens to guys like this? The answer is unless they are arrested for committing a crime, Minus traffic violations, they will be fine and no one will do anything to them.

can they not check before trying to return? some sort of data base? reliable person in Thailand can check for them?

otherwise Cambodia & Laos are very nice.

I'm 21 years old and I'm glad this topic exists. To get my Thai id and passport, I need to be on the tambien which I will do once in Thailand under my aunties house.

I can't speak Thai (a little bit) so I am safe right? I can't join? They don't let half Thai join right?

They now allow half Thais join the Armed forces, a recent change, reported in the News section
