Rather suspect that article. Cantonese would have been the predominant flavor of the Chinese language spoken at that time and by the dictionary is lightning is nowhere near far lap. Wikipaedia quotes a source giving it as Zhuang which is part of the Tai group and is unlikely to be one spoken in Melbourne but differing signifigently. Australian Chinese resturants then were primarily Cantonese.

Great horse, lousy jockey. See the Melbourne Cup was won by a German trained horse with an English jockey. Ryan Moore (the jockey) has won more prize money touring the world in 3 weeks than he won in the previous 5 months in England.
