Trek Madone 2.1 SpeedTrap

On my new bike I have this ugly wart.

Most probably meant to put some speed sensor inside.

Without excessive power I wasn't able to open it or even less to remove it.

Someone know how I can get rid of it, without going to the shop?

There should be a screw under the rubber/plastic circular cap. Just pop the cap off and unscrew it.

That is what I thought. Problem: the bottom of it is soft plastic/rubber. The hard plastic cap goes inside the rubber to its bottom. So you can't grab it. I tried with a screwdriver to go between and lift it up. Even with some force (more and I would be afraid of damage) it doesn't move. I tried to rotate it....No way.

I am missing something. I don't thing I used too little force.

Stupid that trek doesn't mention it in any guide. I think I have to go to the shop for it. But feeling a bit like an idiot....

Update: In the middle of it, is a small rubber plug (which will be lost soon).

Under it, is a screw with an odd head...maybe imperial. I had to grind down a tool to open it.

Than the complete set can be removed. But when you remove it, it leaves a big hole in the fork. The two fork beams aren't equal. This side has a big hole for that plastic part.

Not a nice idea from Trek. It damages the look of it and not many people use that kind of sensor.

What computer are you using/planning on using? The Trek speed trap is an ANT+ speed sensor - ie designed to work with any ANT+ capable cycling computer. The 'ugly wart' is probably not as ugly as the alternative strap-on, but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The only 'problem' is that it isn't a cadence sensor as well. {that would be a 'duotrap'}.....

As a sidenote, I believe the small retaining bolt has a torx head. Torx was developed by American conglomerate Textron back in the sixties, not the imperialist running dogs!!

Torx heads are becoming more prevalent on bikes - many multitools are now compatible.

But don't let all that stop you from enjoying your ride!!

No the speed trap is empty, no sensor inside. Sensor must be purchased extra....

No it is not torx (unless the bad light cheated me) and my torx didn't fit as well, it is an allen (spelling?) but between 2 and 3. So I guess an inch size.

That would be all OK, just that the fork has a deep hole of the size of the speedtrap is frustrating me a bit. the fork should be symmetric and the gadget should be possible to remove.

Sure the Sigma, even they tried to make it neat is looking worse than the speedtrap......

The computer I got was a Bontranger Node 2.1 which came with the speed trap for 2k THB, but that was over 3 years ago.

On the Trek 2.1 2012 model this thing is integrated in the fork and hardly visible, yes I agree it looks ugly on your bike.

yes it also goes into the fork. So if you remove it there is a big hole in the fork
