* Herbatniki

Wydarzyło się to faktycznej osobie, a jestem nią ja. Chciałem złapać pociąg. Było to w kwietniu 1976 roku, w Cambridge w Wielkiej Brytanii. Zostało jeszcze trochę czasu do odjazdu pociągu. Poszedłem po gazetę, by porozwiązywać krzyżówkę, po kawę i paczkę herbatników. Usiadłem przy stoliku. Opiszę wam scenerię - jest niezwykle ważne, abyście bardzo wyraźnie ją ujrzeli. A więc tu mamy stolik, tu gazetę, filiżankę z kawą, herbatniki. Naprzeciwko mnie siedzi mężczyzna, całkiem przeciętny gość w biznesowym garniturze, z teczką. Nic nie wskazywało na to, aby miał zrobić cokolwiek dziwnego. A jednak zrobił: nagle pochylił się do przodu, wziął do ręki herbatniki, rozerwał opakowanie, wyjął jednego i zjadł.

Muszę powiedzieć, że z takiego typu rzeczami my Brytyjczycy bardzo źle sobie radzimy. W naszej historii, naszym wychowaniu, naszej edukacji nie ma nic, co uczyłoby nas, jak zachować się w stosunku do kogoś, kto w biały dzień kradnie nam herbatniki. Wiadomo, co by się stało, gdyby rzecz miała miejsce na dworcu South Central w Los Angeles. Natychmiast rozpoczęłaby się strzelanina, zjawiłyby się helikoptery, CNN, rozumiecie... w końcu zrobiłem to, co zrobiłby każdy czerwonokrwisty Brytyjczyk: zignorowałem wydarzenie. Gapiłem się w gazetę, wziąłem łyk kawy, próbowałem zrozumieć artykuł, w tekst którego się wpatrywałem, nie byłem jednak w stanie nic podjąć, z wyjątkiem powtarzania w myśli: "Co mam robić?".

W końcu uznałem: "Trudno, muszę coś zrobić". Próbując z całych sił nie zauważać, że w tajemniczy sposób paczka została otwarta, wyjąłem herbatnik. Pomyślałem sobie: "To go uspokoi". Nie uspokoiło, bowiem po chwili powtórzył to, co przedtem. Wziął następny herbatnik. Ponieważ za pierwszym razem nic nie powiedziałem, za drugim jakby trudniej było podnieść temat: "Przepraszam bardzo, trudno tego nie zauważyć, ale...". Nic by to nie dało.

Zjedliśmy całą paczkę. Było w niej co prawda tylko osiem herbatników, ale sprawa zdawała się trwać wieczność. On brał herbatnik, ja brałem herbatnik, on brał herbatnik. Kiedy skończył, wstał i odszedł. Wymieniliśmy pełne znaczenia spojrzenia, po czym poszedł sobie, ja zaś głęboko odetchnąłem i opadłem cieżko na oparcie krzesła.

Wkrótce podstawiono pociąg, dopiłem kawę, wstałem i podniosłem gazetę, pod którą leżały moje herbatniki. Tym, co szczególnie lubię w tej opowieści, jest wrażenie, że gdzieś po Anglii przez ostatnie ćwierć wieku krąży całkowicie przeciętny facet, który ma do opowiedzenia identyczną historię - tyle tylko, że brakuje jej puenty.
