If you are not too serious a cyclist, there is Railway Park which is adjacent to Jatujak Park. It has a 2.5Km track and you can rent bikes at the park. But if your into something more serious, it's probably best to head outside of the city.

You might also consider Rama IX Park on Srinakarin Road near the famous Seacon Square shopping center. That park must be at least 3-4km around and has a beautiful lake in the center of it.

Try contacting Struan via eMail [email protected] and ask him for details of the road cycling along the side of the bangkok-chonburi highway.

Also try contacting the bike hash people (some road bike as well as mtb) at Bangkok Bike Hash (google it)

The place to cycle is Bangkok itself. Book a tour with Co van Kessel Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours. He has a great tour departing from Chinatown. I've been doing the tour several times, really good.

Everything is included: bike, drinks, guide and a few longtailboat rides as wel.

Co van Kessel is a Dutchman (as am I), but his site is also in English.

The Lumphini park circuit is 2.5 km.

You can take the elevated walkway/cycleway from the northeast corner of Lumphini park and cycle to Queen Sirikit (Benjakriti) park (some stair climbing involved and watch out for the broken glass). Entry to Queen Sirikit park is through the Tobacco Monopoly gates. (turn right at the wooden bridge at the end of Suk Soi 10).

A few laps round Lumphini followed by half a dozen around QS and you can get nearly 2 hours of cycling with hardly any traffic fumes.

I've never been one for cycling in a park but if you can get to Ram Intra, try one of my circuits or both!

Starting from Central, Ram Intra, ride for just over 3 kms to Ram Intra 39 and turn left and cycle for about 600m, turning right onto Sukhaphiban 5. Now you have a virtually empty road for about 10km - in a morning, most of the traffic is heading towards Ram Intra and you are heading away from it! It looks as if it is slight incline but it looks that way going the opposite way! Turn left onto Sai Mai Road and keep going to the end; you know when you are at the end when you go over a canal bridge and then bear left onto Phahon Yothin 54/1. JUst after 1500 metres along Soi 54/1, there is a right turn marked 'Phahon Yothin', ignore this as it adds 1.5 kms to your journey. Now turn left at the end onto Phahon Yothin and we have just over 3kms on Phahon Yothin to the Laksi Monument and turn left onto Ram Intra and you are only 500 metres from the finish. Total distance is about 27kms of which 20km is on 'quiet' roads.

A shorter trip of about 14kms, starting at the junction of Lat Plakhoa and Kasert-Nawamin. After 4 kms you will see the flyover at Pradit Manuthan Road and bear left. Two kms later you will bear left onto Ram Intra. Be careful on Ram Intra, it is a busy bus route - avoid the left lane if you can or you will be stopping and starting. If you look to your right after about 1 km you will see the Police Flying Division and the DC3 Dakota as gate guardian. Two further kms down the road, bear left at the flyover and turn onto Lat Plakhao Road and it's a straight run to your start point.

Where does the elevated walkway/cycleway come out in relation to Queen Sirikit Park... I cycle inside there a lot on its cycling circuit... but I've never seen how to access the elevated cycleway from there heading to Lumpini...

Ohh... are you talking about the concete path that runs above/along a klong there, with the entry point just at the wooden bridge on Soi 10... I've walked that down to about soi 4, up and down a lot of stairs...but never went beyond there... Does following that path go all the way to Lumpini???

There is cycle lane right there in lower sukhumvit running from nana to emporium and maybe further. Convenient and no need to go out of the city.

MJo...are you talking about the non-existant one that supposedly runs along the sidewalk on the odd-numbered sois side of Sukhumvit Road.... the one where there are some intermittent painted lines running along the pavement.... the one that is virtually impassable with sidewalk vendors, pedestrians, construction projects, curbs, people laying on the ground, and all other manner of obstruction????

Or did you have a different route in mind???

That's the one, priceless ! Now they only need BiB's to hang out there and "fine" all the cyclists for not staying in the designated bike lane

I've been riding a bit on the sidewalks, if you can call them that, along lower Sukhumvit Road lately, going very slowly around pedestrians...mainly just to get to side sois that are suitable for actual riding.

I did wonder a bit, if sometime I'd get a BIB hassling me for doing that on the sidewalk. But then I remembered how every time I'm walking out there, I find the motorcycle taxi guys or the fast food delivery guys driving their motorcycles up and down the sidewalks.... and coming up behind me as I walk.

So it makes me think, I probably don't have much to fear about that... Of course, those guys are Thais...not farang....
