" Air Con " Don't you just hate it viewers ...?

Hello Viewers!

Firstly i am " not moaning " ( i shall leave the moaning to our resident Thai Visa viewers who are doing " a splendid job " ...)

I have lived in Thailand for 4 years ( and 20 years in the Canary Islands previously doing bugger all ..) But i have come to the decision ( an executive decision viewers..) that i can't stand " Air Con " I spend most of my time outside ( That's why i came to Thailand for the " outdoor lifestyle " ) and in my small rented room i sometimes use a fan. But wherever i go for example " Shopping Malls,Buses, offices, schools, etc etc " are all cooled down by Air Con to the point that i find it " uncomfortable ".I even tried to go and see a " cool movie " the other evening but had to walk out of the cinema after just 10 minutes due to feeling like i was on the film set of " Ice Station Zebra " ( " Hideous " ) I think i can probably just about handle 15 minutes in a shopping mall ! How do these guys actually " survive " by working in these unnecessary " cold temperatures? Maybe it's just me ( i always was a " bit different " ..) but is there anybody else who also dislikes Air Con ...?

Continually surprised at just how low the temperatures are set,

certainly below comfort level for us for any period.

Considering how expensive it is to run air conditioning it makes you wonder why?

No way would I want to sit in my office without air-con, it's just to uncomfortable for that.

This time of the year though, generally don't need the air-con on much when at home, especially with the nce cool breeze we have at the moment

Love my AC. They do set it far too low at the movie theater my family frequents but we came up with an ingenious solution, we dress for the temperature, long pants and sleeves and maybe a pullover.

I would have to agree with canarysun to a certain degree that aircon when set too low, can be uncomfortable to say the least.

However, to not have the option of aircon?

I suppose it is what you are used to. I could get by with just a fan but would always prefer the aircon fallback, especially from March - June..................wink.png

Can't live in Isaan during the summer months without air conditioning.

But that's just me.

Cheers..... Mal.

Air con always makes me cough after it has been on.

Fan(s) most of the time.

Air con for me is a must when getting 'my leg over' - after all, she is so hot . . . . . . .

edit (did not want to disappoint D48) LOL.

Canarysun, I'm with you 100%, , air con is for fairies, if it's too hot get out of the kitchen.Throughout modern history many notable personalities have opposed the indiscriminate use of air con, including the highly respected DJ, whispering Bob Harris who once turned down an interview with the legendary guitarist Jerry Garcia on the grounds the air con was just too cold,

Air con is one reason why I don't travel first class on Thai trains. Having made that decision I think 'to hell with it' and take peasant class with fans.

It's the same for me too! You can't get much better than a " 3rd class ordinary train " with the window open and a gentle breeze.

I wonder if the government schools have Air Con ? if i had things my way i would " unplug the bloody lot " !

Government School near me have Air-Con, and those parents that want "special" for there students pay extra for them to be taught in "Air" rooms.

Is this actually true or a wind up ..? ( kind respect to the " Global Moderator " .... ) wai2.gif

Absolutely true, I am talking about my niece, so this is first hand knowledge, her father pays additional "fees" for her to be taught in an "air-con" room.

when I first came to Thailand I always had the aircon set at 20 at night. Now after nearly 5 years here I prefer 27 to sleep in. At the condo I manage I have set the public area and offices to 25 and on medium fan only. Some moans from staff to start with but now they're all ok with it.

i think it's a matter of wrong imaginations....back in the old country I heated my home up to 24 C and imagined it was nice warm...here i cool down my place down to 24C and think nice cold...

anything below 20C is just hilarious...

Well I am currently ( absolutely live viewers ) relaxing in a " horizontal position " in my 2000 baht a month room with no hideous air con and no fan required...listening to some seriously cool " Buddha Bar " tunes........ Greetings to you all...x

That's why you don't need the air con: Buddha Bar compilations thumbsup.gif

I agree air con is good for sex for much of the year unless you're right on front of a fan or get her to do most of the work (preferable).

I have air at 27 if I want to cool down or at 30 for a general placebo effect. I really appreciate having air con first thing in the morning so I am not already over-heating until I've made it to the BTS platform (one of the circles of Hell). Also appreciate a blast when I get home again.

Air con in classrooms makes a huge difference for a farang, that is, if he's active and doing a decent job. In Isaan the school only had fans which didn't cover most of the room. I was drenched in sweat but kids would fan me themselves. That took some getting used to, but they fanned the Thai teachers as well so I just accepted it.

One thing I'd like to know is the difference in cost between using a good sized fan vs. having the air con on at a high temperature so it's just blowing air around. If the air con is not doing much or any cooling maybe it's not financially much different to using a fan. Anyone know about that?

I can't believe anybody would have air con on today. I put on my jacket .

This all depends on where abouts in the country you are, it looked like it was about 30 degrees C out there today which is pretty warm.

It's a lot colder up north than it is here in Hua Hin.

I hate it too. Just feels wrong, especially living in a hot climate like Thailand. I used to get all kinds of lung/nose problems from having air-con running all the time. Funny thing it stopped when I moved to a fan cooled room. A proper fan will do a good job of keeping you cool. Just need to keep the windows open and the humidity will disappear with the cool breeze. thumbsup.gif

No, I love the aircon. The weather in Thailand is awful, except up north during the winter. Most of Thailand is unlivable in my opinion without aircon. I'm generally a cheap guy but a few thousand of month on aircon is one thing I never scrimp on

Viewers!

It's rather interesting ( well not that interesting.....) that having lived in hot countries for most of my life and i walk absolutely everywhere ( even from Naklua to Jomtien ) i would feel so lazy to use a baht bus for such a short journey! but as i do spend most of the day outside that " I never sweat ".But the " Air Con Brigade " ( kind respect to you " ladies " ..) seem to break out in hideous amounts of sweat by just opening there front door!

There has been times i have considered " working in Thailand " and it's never been a worry for me not being able to do the job as i have been " talking absolute rubbish " for years! ( and successfully may i add....) but what would worry me is that most of the jobs are working indoors with " air con " on full blast! and i just couldn't handle it!

Canary you mentioned you bummed around canary islands for 20 years and now many here in Los doing same (BTW go idea) ....however I don't know if your qualified to comment on the concept of work. This would be all too abstract.

I hate air con also. Have blues with gf if she ever wants it on
