PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: -- A 38-year-old man from Kanchanaburi stuck on a cliff at Khao Tamong Lai national park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province since yesterday evening was rescued this afternoon.

The man, identified later as Monchai Thongtabtim was picked up by rescue team which had to walk several hours to the cliff where he was stuck and bring him down to safety.

Earlier helicopter borne effort to rescue him from the steep cliff was not possible because the man was stuck in a crevice of the cliff covered with trees.

Rescue team then decided to climb the cliff and bring him down.

He was exhausted after being stuck in the crevice for more than 10 hours.

He said he got lost and tried to return by climbing down the slope of the hill. But it was dark and then misstepped and fell to the crevice of the cliff.

Earlier a village headman in the area said he heard a shout for help from the cliff which is near his home late in the afternoon yesterday.

He called local authorities who later asked for help from the Border Patrol Police based in Naresuan camp in Phetburi province.

A helicopter was sent in but could not rescue the man as he was stuck in the crevice covered by trees.

Rescue team decided to climb the hill for several hours before locating him and bring him back.

The Nation

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: -- A Thai tourist was rescued yesterday after plunging off a cliff in a national park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province and being stuck there for 18 hours.

Khao Ta Mong Lai Forestry chief Phongsathon Phromkhunthod said Monchai Thongthabthim was thought to have climbed up a hill via a route built for trekkers but slipped off on his way down and got stuck beside a mountain.

Villagers heard Monchai calling for help at around 8pm on Sunday and notified police and rescue workers. A search party went out and spotted him at around 3am after he set his shirt on fire with a lighter to show his location.

Provincial Governor Weera Sriwat-thanatrakool said Monchai, 38, who was taken to hospital, told him he had travelled alone from Kanchanaburi, and was drinking beer at the Prachuap train station before being approached by a man and a woman. He later fell unconscious and found himself on the hill after dark, he said. However, police doubt his story and have said they will wait for him to recover fully before interviewing the man.

Watched the rescue team on T.V. news all in all not a bad effort as equipment was minimal but certainly effort 100%.

Good work by all involved.
