DWR ready to cope with drought

BANGKOK, 14 January 2015 (NNT) – The Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be ready to public assistance in the drought season, while asking the public to report to the Damrongtham Center to request for help, said Director-General.

The DWR Director-General Jatuporn Buruspat announced the department's prevention and relief measures for the drought season, saying that the Prime Minister has established a Water Management and Policy Committee in concern of the drought situation.

He said that the Prime Minister has ordered related agencies, such as the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work together to handle the situation.

The DWR Director-General has said that the calculations of the expected drought areas and the prevention measures are already planned previously, since late last year. Therefore, the authorities can provide immediate assistance to the public when needed.

He has said that the authorities have enforced measures to monitor water sources, canals excavation and can boost the water distribution capacity, as well as increasing the capacity of the tap water. The Water Management Center has also been set up to monitor the water situation in cooperation with related agencies.

The public can request for assistance should they found hardship during the drought season at the Damrongtham Center of each province, said the DWR Director-General.

He has also stressed that the DWR's personnel and equipment are well prepared and will be capable of providing instant help to the public.

On the issue of the long-term solving measures, the DWR Director-General has said that the Water Management and Policy Committee has drawn out the drought prevention guidelines for the years 2015-2026, while the consumable water sources campaign for the public will be completed within three years.

However, in order for the plan to succeed, the public must cooperate by helping the nation conserve water, said the DWR Director-General.
