Farmers sell discounted rubber saplings to survive lackluster business

YALA, 19 Jan 2015 (NNT) – Rubber growers affected by the falling rubber price have worked out ways to survive the sluggish state of the industry by selling rubber saplings at weekend markets.

A number of rubber farmers, who previously sold rubber saplings for 15-20 baht each, have decided to offer a big discount on their goods, by selling them for as little as 10 baht each. Some of them admitted that the loss-making rubber industry had prompted them to turn to roadside and weekend markets as places to get rid of their excess saplings despite lower prices.

Although the low rubber prices have pushed down production costs, rubber producers disclosed that the dramatic drop in income had indeed deprived them of the motivation to pursue the rubber business. Some revealed that the retail price of their saplings had now dropped by 50 percent.

Dumpsite fire in Prachin Buri broke out, and put out
The Nation

30252162-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A pre-dawn fire broke out at a dumpsite in Prachin Buri's Kabin Buri district yesterday affecting more than 600 residents of nearby villages, an informed source reported.

The dumpsite, operated by Tambon Kabin Buri Municipality, caught fire at 2.30am and produced thick smoke that gave many villagers skin rash, respiratory difficulties and eye irritation throughout the morning. Kabin Buri Hospital dispatched medical staff to provide affected people with first aid and health checks.

The source said the fire could be the result of a forest fire caused by the scavenging activities of some of the villagers. Last night, fire engines managed to control the fire but tens of thousands of tons of garbage were still smouldering. Backhoes were sent to assist the fire extinguishing efforts.

Thailand often encounters dumpsite fires as the garbage management issue continues to be a challenge. A fire at a Samut Prakan dumpsite last March affected hundreds of residents and led to a lawsuit against the Praksa Tambon Administration Organisation president, the Samut Prakan governor, the provincial industry office, the provincial natural and environment office and the Pollution Control Department. They were accused of neglecting to control the dumpsite and allowing it to operate without a permit.

EDITORIAL
Keep away from hatred, detach from politicians

The Nation

This year, Thais will have to confront some of the serious issues dividing the country, hopefully with maturity

BANGKOK: -- Last week, there was talk about banning "hate speech". The constitution-drafters may have identified a major problem, but it is questionable if they were proposing the right cure. In making people hate their opponents, politicians make the public hate one another. That is the case in Thailand, where family ties and friendships have been severely affected by political differences.
