Windows 10 will be unveiled tomorrow – will you make the switch?

Microsoft will announce more details about its long-awaited operating system, Windows 10, tomorrow. Will it live up to the considerable hype, and more importantly will it restore confidence in the software giant after the debacle that was Windows 8?

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) sent invitations out last month for an event which takes place on January 21, entitled Windows 10: the next chapter, where it’s expected that more details will be revealed about the latest version, and a look at how it works on tablets and smartphones.

I'll certainly give it a go, once it appears in my Microsoft Action Pack download options.

I've been running the Technical Preview for a while on a non-works machine, seems to be stable but no significant advantage over W8, we shall see what the actual release version brings to the table.

I've been using the technical preview which is right now as buggy as hell.

Tomorrow is more likely to be an announcement of a more public beta.

About a week ago I got an email from MS inviting me to install an app called "Preview for Developers" on my Windows Phone. I did that but so far the app doesn't do anything at all.

I get the impression that a beta version of Windows Phone 10 will be released at the same time. I guess we'll know by Thursday (BKK time).

I still see zero reason to move from Win7.

I have 8.1 on my laptop because I got the "upgrade" when MS were selling it for USD25 and I thought it would be a good idea to have it in case one of my customers wanted to know something about it. But even with Classic Shell installed to make it more like Win 7 I still dont like it and if I used the laptop more than once or twice a year when travelling then I would surely downgrade to Win7.

The only reason I would have for upgrading to Win 10 is if the GUI looks and works exactly like Win7, complete with aero, a proper start menu, apps that run in windows and absolutely no obligatory full-screen apps of any type (I dont mind the ones for which I choose to make the window full-screen or not). And no tiles. But I'm not holding my breath for any of that.

The upshot is that Windows 10 doesn’t really need to beat Windows 8 – it needs to be demonstrably better than Windows 7, as that’s when the business world (and everybody else) will decide to make the upgrade.

I'll certainly give it a go

Install some descent Linux distro and never look back. smile.png

Horses for courses, I do run two machines under Linux and a VM running Solaris86 when needed.

But much of the software needed by my job runs only under Windows and since I get it effectively for free I will be using it.

I'll keep using Windows 7 Ultimate on all of my systems (3) until Windows 10 is a year old or I have to buy a new PC/Laptop.

I bought a Window 8 laptop in the US a couple of months ago and just hate it. Even with Classic Shell it's still a mess. I'll upgrade to Windows 10 when available. It has to be better than 8. bah.gif

I downgraded a school computer from 8.1 to 7, because it sucked so much that it was already annoying.

I think Windows 10 will satisfy the crowd that wants the familiar, cascading menu system of programs from the Windows Start key with a list of the most recently used programs. You just have to ignore the "Modern" apps that also appear on the Start menu.

For those who seem to despise and/or struggle with Windows 8/8.1: do you boot directly to the desktop? I never see the Modern/Metro screen except when I search for an installed program. From the familiar desktop, I just press the Windows key and start typing the name of the program (like I did in Windows 7.)

Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Microsoft has announced that its next operating system will be offered as a free upgrade to owners of devices running Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Phone.

The announcement marks a change in strategy to its previous policy of charging for major updates.

The offer, which is limited to the OS's first year of release, may aid its adoption.

That is giving up a lot, a whole lot, of sales.

And then there's the following year, no more free, and maybe they'll actually have a user db where you must be a licensed, registered WIndows user before you can get patches, updates, etc and the thing calls home regularly. I think they've tried this before and bungled it.

Hmm.... am I missnig something? Where is Windows 9??

I always found the odd numbered vesions to be best.

The unofficial story is that there were too many references to "Win9" in the legacy code due to it supporting Win95/98, etc.
