an hour ago I inserted my bank card into a faulty K-Bank ATM, it displayed a Windows XP error code. I was shocked this guy is still running on Windows XP. what possible security threats with outdated communication protocol and security measure on vulnerable Windows XP ?

I don't have a million in the bank, and I have a concern !

555, while it may appear shocking, many ATM run Windows XP all over the planet

They "may" have an independent support deal with Micro$oft
Also, consider its not on an open network.. for anyone to be able to create any intrusion on such a system would need access, and if you have access to a banking network then the AATM operating system would be the least of your concerns.

IIRC, it's not like it's running xp home or some other retail edition. I think there were special forks of xp for ATMs and embedded system sort of stuff. Super stripped down to just perform limited functions.

BARCLAYS ATMs in the UK are on XP as well, as I found out when it crashed and rebooted in front of me the other day.

They are one of the few that give English notes here in Scotland by the way, just head to your local Morrisons supermarket.

Most ATM run Microsoft XP Embedded, which still gets security updates (until 2016).

not too much a bad news if it is an embedded system.

16 hours after I been there yesterday, I passed by this ATM this morning and curiosity leads me there again. error message still there. since it is a stand-alone ATM console, the UPS and a modem look-alike are flashing next to the tower, with cables to the wall sockets.
