To discover and experience Thainess of course.

Yeah, I first came for the "exotic" experience of Asia. The weather, the food, the temples were all considerably different than anything I'd experience anywhere before (in North America or Europe).

The Grand Palace, Floating Market, tuk-tuks, Tom Yum Goong ! Even the smells (such as they were) were all strange and, in some cases, fascinating (though I could have done without the ever present smell of dog-shit baking in the sun). I knew nothing about the "nightlife" other than that song "One Night In Bangkok" (which is actually from a musical about a chess tournament). I'd seen the original version of "The King and I" when I was a kid but didn't really remember much of it. At the time, Thailand was one of those "magical" destinations that you may only ever get 1 chance in your lifetime to go to.

Almost everything about that first trip left a lasting impression on me, right up to the point where I was at the airport trying to check in for my departing flight, flat broke and facing a 200 baht Departure Tax ! (Not too mention the 2 hours spent sitting on the plane at the gate, watching out the window as guys on step-ladders were tinkering with one of the engines - whatever they did must have worked as the rest of the flight was smooth as (Lufthansa) silk.)

love the nightlife and the girls best sex industry on the planet

Too few choices, far too narrow. Many people come here for work, some for health care, for others it's a matter of economics and cheap cost of living, and so on. But I do sense an attempt to make sure that option two is the winner perhaps! coffee1.gif

this will really reflect the kind of people that use this discussion board.

not the reason why 'people' visit Thailand.

I wanted to live in Asia, I was tossing up between Malaysia and Thailand.

Thailand one because of the food...

I voted food.

I think the poll missed weather and overall costs. Those are two things I hear a lot.

I first came here, many years ago, because I wanted a holiday somewhere that was hot during the UK winter, was exotic and interesting, had good food and nice beaches. I kept coming back because I liked it here, and eventually moved here because life's too short to live in one part of the world your whole life.

No mention of the cost of living?... it's funnier with the temples or the sexptas of course tongue.png

I rent a little house/bungalow with two rooms two air cons, a terrace, a garden with plenty of banana trees smile.png... 10,000 Baht

In my country totally impossible facepalm.gif for this price maybe a 20/25 sqare meter studio!

I forget to say 5 minutes from the beach, in south of France same little house on the sea side I guess 1500 euros monthly 18,000 euros a year compared to 3,000 here in Thailand difference 15,000 euros a year for rent only

All of them. Add to that the fact it is the most relaxing place I've ever found.

So now we have a clear picture of the demographics for the average TVF member... whistling.gif

Very poor poll question.

There are as many reasons as there are TV members. And for longtime visitors and long-time residents, I suspect that the reason morphed over time.

Whereas the first time for me was a Thai girl I met in the US, subsequently it was sex, and eventually, it just became the feeling I got as soon as I stepped off the plane in to that sickly sweet and humid air, the ride from Don Muang, and the freedom to go where I wanted, when I wanted, without the oppressive 'shoulds' and 'shouldn'ts'.

After moving there, the pace of life, the challenges of getting things done the Thai way, and the little surprises of daily life were just of the few reasons I stayed.

If not for my own changing priorities, and the increasing government bs, I would still be there.

Can you make this one of the poll's multiple choice answers?

I rest my face.

I think the poll missed weather and overall costs. Those are two things I hear a lot.

Yup, warm weather and low costs.

Oh, and I nearly forgot, available women . . .

Ask a Thai and they will say "you like Thai lady".. 100% true. We also like the weather and the low cost of living. They all go hand in hand. But which would of the 3 would you give up first?

Ask a Thai and they will say "you like Thai lady".. 100% true.

That might be true for you, but you don't speak for all of us.

Some of us visit Thailand to see family and friends......like annually.

Ask a Thai and they will say "you like Thai lady".. 100% true.

That might be true for you, but you don't speak for all of us.
If you want to quote me use all my answer. And where does it say I spoke for you? So you say it might be true but don't speak for you? Back to the little Soi and wake up..

I quoted the part I was replying to. If you don't like that, well, tough shit.

When you say 'we' like this and that, who is the 'we' you're referring to?

Are you sure a country under martial law is the best choice for that?

Sorry if I offended you in my original post. Maybe I should have put Thai partner in your case? Thats ok with me as I'm not homophobic.

Wasn't under martial law 25+ years ago.
