The EHIC card has been going for yours, normally it is recommended that anyone traveling to Europe carrys one,it enables for example british pensioners wintering in spain or Portugal to receive the same medical treatment asthey would at home, it is quite a good system , no card, no treatment, seems reasonable to assume the same system would work in the UK

Its an E111 or EHIC card

If you have a NI number you should be able to get one. My wife has one as she has a NI number. There have been reports of some problems in Spain, last year I think, with treatment being refused but that may be history now.

Had one in the late 1990s, application was straight forward. Not sure if it would be if not an EU resident.

You need to be a UK resident to qualify for EHIC, the problems in spain were caused by the usual bludgers trying to get free non essential treatment while on holiday, causinggreat difficulties for expats here in spain
