How to stop TRUE redirecting attempts to search on Google

I'm on True and haven't had any problems. Are the forums you are using anything that Thailand might want blocked?

Try searching from https://www.google.com/?hl=en to see if you can search with Google that way.

Don't think so one is about slotcars xsmile.png.pagespeed.ic.CwSpBGGvqN5Zxnsx

I'm on TOT at the moment and it works fine. If I connect using TRUE and type <google.com> it redirects to <http://welcome.truelife.com/#>

The forums are waiting for a connection to google which they never get. The bottom of the screen says waiting for google.com

Do you ever use a free ADSL router supplied by True? I seem to recall something similar years ago with True. The firmware or the True installation software had some True landing page built in and it wasn't possible to get rid of it unless you used your own hardware which is what I eventually did.

I have True internet and do not have this issue (at home, not mobile).

I too suspect it is something in the router. A possibility is to change your DNS and see if that fixes it.

I use True on my home computers and never have a problem. It could be that your browser settings need to be fixed. I find that after awhile of doing various program installs and updates, my list of "preferred search engines" has ballooned from being just Google.com to a list of a dozen different sites and somehow at least one of them has changed my Default preference.

If you are on Chrome go to Settings and the 4th item down should be "Search". Under that is an icon for "Manage Search Engines". The window that opens has 2 boxes, "Default Search Settings" and "Other Search Engines".

In the first box I delete anything that isn't google.com so that it is left as the "Default" search engine. Search engines that appear in that box usually come from when you install or update a program and it installs it's own "search bar" (often that is the preselected option so that when you click to proceed with the installation/update, it installs the search engine as your default choice).

The second box seems to fill with "search engines" from sites you've visited. For example I now have "Amazon.com" listed in the "Other Search Engines" because I did a search on their site for an item. Those other search engines can also be deleted to clean up the clutter and prevent one of them from mistakenly becoming your "default" search engine.

There really is something strange about True DSL and Google. At least in certain areas, so could be misconfiguration of a DSLAM.

Most Google services don't work right if you try http://www.google.com but they do work right with https://www.google.com -- it's the non-secure http only that seems to have a problem. This seems to affect every subdomain of *.google.com too.

That matters because many pages try to load a google plus button or other service from http://apis.google.com instead of the https and when they do this it can cause the page to not load.

Also it matters in Google search results because the google results when you click them go first to google [so they know you clicked] and then to the site you want. If the results are going first to http then you never get sent to the real page you want.

This started a while ago when True changed the way they do proxy services for DSL customers. It broke many Dyanmic DNS services so it's harder to run a website from your own computer, too.

I have definitely seen True manipulate http requests so this isn't surprising.

Changing your DNS to non-True can help, but does not eliminate.

Using HTTPS wherever possible also works for those https deliverable components.

Unfortunately the only complete solution is to route through a VPN. This also mitigates the deep packet inspection that has been occuring at Thailand's edgepoints (those mysterious why are all my overseas connections running so slow issue).

Well, I'm not an expert on this, but I've been using Thai internet for several years now (TOT dedicated cable in Bangkok, 3BB Broadband, Nakhon Sawan) and what you describe is usually the result of malware. Especially in the case of any change to your home page or default search engine. If you haven't already, I recommend you download Spyware Search & Destroy or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (or both) and scan your hard drive. There should never be anything added to your browser preverences. Period. Never. Something is wrong.

For those with url redirection issues, one recommendation has been to 'set' the DNS entries in the router to use Google's Public DNS url>IP Lookup Servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8,4.4.

If you can't edit the router DNS settings then try editing the connection settings directly on the device you use (PC, laptop, tablet, phone, set-top-box, etc) and specify the 8.8.8.8 for DNS lookups.

When you arrive at google. co.th and then click the 'results in English ' on the right side, doesn't that solve it? I use duckduckgo, but there are not as many results, so when i feel something is missing, i switch to google.

Check your browser settings.

If you're using IE, open it and then click the Gear icon on the right. From there, choose Internet Options.

In the General tab, check to see if the Welcome True page is listed there. If it is, click it and then click Delete (or hit the Delete key).

If you're using Firefox, go to Tools | Options and then change it there.

In the image, I've configured both IE and Firefox to load a blank page when I launch either of them which is why you see that description.

  • 1 year later...

none of the above applies if you subscribe via true online. it appears any web page you enter has a 30% chance of you ending up at Trues welcome page, This is hijacking at your local hub not your router.

I considered calling the helpdesk but they wouldn't understand. consider moving to Sinet or 3BB or something like that.
