Wanted in Paradise Episode 4 Phuket BBC Documentary 2015

Commercial diver Alex Summers wants to abandon the Glasgow climate with his partner Jane and young baby for a new life in Thailand. He and his family are used to him being away for long stretches of time, but for Jane it's a different story. She's never left her native Glasgow and would miss her sisters terribly if they were to make the move. Will a week putting a new life on the island of Phuket to the test persuade her to make the move?

An interesting documentary I watched last night about some Brits looking to leave Glasgow and move to Phuket.

  • Yep. Very misleading program. Certainly no mention of qualifications or visa issues.

I saw that.

No mention of not being able to buy the homes they were viewing.

(Maybe some were condos)

No mention of Visas.

It was as if they just turn up, buy a house; she gets a job and starts working.

All done and dusted after a week looking round.

I was not watching too carefully, but seemed the wife walked into an international school ( don't think she had a relevant qualifications ) snd was offered a job?

No mention of visas, the programme make it look as if they were moving to France-and of course how were they going to buy that they looked at?

They liked the last property-had a completely open roof terrace with a pool- can you imagine anything hotter during the summer hot season?

Too many difficulties glossed over

Yep. Very misleading program. Certainly no mention of qualifications or visa issues.

So he said teachers make about 7,000 pounds a month. that would be 345,000 baht a month I think they got that wrong.

She would not be teaching English to my kids. I am having trouble understanding her.

Similar programme 'Escape to the Winter Sun' about Brits buying houses in the USA. No mention of the fact that you can only stay there for a short while, but cannot live there.

A similar show a few years back about Brits in Australia, the next day there were about 2,000,idiots lined up outside the Australian embassy, they interviewed some

"just want to book me ticket, and get over" Mrs Jones from shoreditch said.

"i have heard you get more on the dole over there" Colin hopefull stated.

No mention of the stringent visa regulations and 6 month wait to know if it is confirmed.

Sounds like the BBC did the usual thing : decided the program they wanted to make at the start then just filmed the stuff which backed it up.

Something is seriously broken in that organisation these days. The news reports of Thailand are also shockingly distorted sometimes.

LISSEN AGAIN IT WAS 7,000 POUNDS A YEAR

LostDemocracy is totally wrong re Brits staying in USA. No limit on their stay and they can buy land and houses.

"The people are so friendly"...............I was fully reassured dohhhh!

I am glad I am wrong because that means I could buy a house in Florida and live there for ever? No visa nothing. Is that correct?

New episode on tonight. A gentleman bored with his lot in UK decides to take his partner to a place called Khanom (never heard of it) just south of Surat Thani.

They planned to buy land and build a B&B resort. A mention that that could only own 49% of the property and a Thai partner would own 51% went in one ear and out of the other. No mention of work permits, that they would have to set up a company and that they would require 8 Thai staff to cover their two work permits. They budgeted for earning 4,000 baht a night in high season per room in Nakhon Nowhere. Neither of the two gentlemen had any cooking skills, or hotel skills; couldn't speak Thai. But they were prepared to sell everything they had in the UK in order to live in a place they had only spent one week of their lives in.

Not watched the Khanom episode yet but it sounds a recipe for disaster.

A very nice area with lovely beaches.

Just watching this!

Some guy selling them a rai of land- of course!

They have never been to Thailand before - looked at beach backpacker bungalows in Samui- they were surrounded by sand bags - to stop high tide getting into the property- illegal building on the beach anyone?

Hoping to get full occupancy 9 months of the year- of course.

Visas - no mention of that little pesky problem.

These guys will sell up their rather pleasant house - burn their boats and lose the lot to the scary sharks ( estate agents ) who have promised everything to earn their commission .

Do your homework- come here to retire with a stunningly wonderful pension- it can be a pleasant life- otherwise be prepared for tears. Did they think the NHS still functions in Thailand- so add in a few more thousands for a decent health insurance.

Did those two pick ups have outstanding finance.

They never do follow ups to these programmes- rainy season- roof leaks, pools have gone green, can't find any reliable staff , the lawyer turned out to be very economical with the truth, the documents signed ( in Thai) turned out to be totally fake.

Madness.

Really misleading programme, no mention of ''Visa's'' , and i dont think that it would be that easy for her to find a decent job..

Also, for him , his wages were not that great, for being in the ''Diving Industry''..

all looks good, on Screen, but in reality , not, especially with the wee one.. ,

Scotland did look beautiful, but damp and wet, ... which is DEFINETLY NOT FOR ME....

Whatever they decide, all the best...

Learning Thai has to be on the cards as well....., as you are lost without it...

Well watch it again .

Nothing wrong with her accent. Are you a Yank by any chance? I'd question her spelling - seems she doesn't know how to spell Nigel.

Many apologies- this time I will sit staring at the screen and take in every nuance and detail.

The one in the Seychelles was better. With the big splash!!

I haven't seen the latest one.

Just watched it,right load of old rubbish, loved the bit where they vastly overpriced their tatty flats in Scotland,,just the sort of quality expats we need,6 months then on the plane home
