They are more like fresh water shrimps (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). My cousin calls them UN shrimps (Large head - small body) ha ha...

Lots of fresh water prawn farms in Thoeng district - around 60 km east of Chiang Rai - going to Chiang Kham (Phayao province). It now sells for around 250 to 350 Baht per kilo (Live - fresh).

fresh water shrimps have no taste, sea water shrimps are delicious.. Loads of fresh water fish and shrimps in our Mae Sai markets. I do not buy them. grown in brown water,,,,yuck Not a big seller , may be too expensive for general use. Pork and chicken sell well.

Doug the owner of Bourbon Street in Bangkok has them on his menu and I remember years and years ago he had his own crawfish farm......he is a real nice guy so drop in and ask him if your near Bkk.

The farm of Bourbon Street is in Kanchanaburi.

You have a lot of wild ones in Nan province, but they are small and you eat the whole lot,

I get used to it after all these years.

Use to be a lot of them in L P, I think they come from the Nam Ou, or Nam Kham, not sure yet with the dam...n

If I not mistaken, best season was June to september, together with the Chanterelles.
