Phin guitar - DIY project

Featured Replies

Help please smile.png anyone build a Phin guitar before?

I am very interested in making my own Isaan Phin Guitar.

I would very much welcome any help, images or drawings/notes on construction of an electric guitar of the Phin Guitar type.

I have seen Youtube videos of Isaan music and I just LOVE the sound of the electric Phin guitar.

Will of course share details of my build, and photographs, on a separate webpage.

But please, if you know how to build one, or have any guides I would be grateful.

General is not the place, will try if any help available in Isaan forum.

Hi

I was told you can buy parts and ready made phins in China town Bangkok in the music shops there. ( not been myself )

Now my advice to you is buy a ready made one and modify it yourself. The most important thing is find one with a straight

neck, they do not have a truss rod . So this is the number one thing. also the cheap Phins don’t have real frets set into the neck,

Just wire laid on the neck in a slight groove and varnished over, fret it yourself. There is no separate fret board on the cheap Phins.

its all done on one bit of wood with a dragons head glued on the at the machine head end.

Hope this helps.
