NLA members say new electoral system won’t solve vote buying

BANGKOK, 4 April 2015 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) says it does not think the new electoral system under the draft constitution would solve the problem of vote buying, saying the charter drafters should instead focus on the strengthening of electoral monitoring bodies.

According to Taweesak Sutkwatin, an NLA member, the NLA members have concluded that vote buying will go on regardless of how good the new electoral system is. Efforts should be redirected to increasing the monitoring power of organizations, such as the Election Commission to better conduct investigations.

Mr Taweesak further revealed that most NLA members agreed that a public referendum should be held and that all proposals were being gathered and would be submitted to the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC). The NLA would hold a final brainstorming seminar between May to Jun in order to compile all input on the new constitution to be submitted to the charter drafters, he said.

Most NLA members are of the opinion that the power of the new Senate under the new constitution is excessive, adding that the members feel that a body that is not entirely elected by the public should have its powers limited, added Mr.Taweesak

the thai mind seems to approach any problem from the stand point ''it cannot be corrected/solved'' instead of lets look at the problem we have, methods avaliable to solve, use/modify what we have to approach vote buying, and add some real punishment for those who continue.

they approach all misbehavior like they do their children, point, laugh and note how cute they are and blame anything but the cause ''the individual responsible''.

vote buying can be easily solved...just have better policies and incentives than the other guys!!

Yup. Rice buying scheme starting at 30,000. Minimum wage at 600. Car incentive at free tax and deposit.

My ex-girlfriend's granddad loved elections as he would go into the centre of the town and wait to be approached, gave him his beer .money.

He repeated this everyday until the election hoping to meet different canvassers.

Eliminate vote buying ? It's another way of life.

I have said this last year - support the poor. Hold national elections every 6 months.

Vote buying has been going on since the beginning of time in Thailand. No one has ever cared about it until TS did it, and then its a massive problem...

It will be rampant again in the next election, and it will only be a problem depending on who wins......

More of a problem depending who loses ;)

Vote buying has been going on in our village for decades according to my wife. It's quite odd and ironic that the people who seem to have such a hardon for it, actually can't vote, and are not Thais. ;)
