The case stems from a 2020 incident at Doha airport, where they were strip-searched after a baby was found abandoned. Initially, a judge dismissed their case, citing limited airline accountability. The women's appeal argued that the initial ruling, which exempted Qatar Airways under global travel laws, was flawed. Now, Australia's Federal Court has overturned this, allowing the lawsuit to proceed. The women are seeking damages for the invasive searches, which they say resulted in severe mental trauma. This legal battle, initiated in 2021, targets Qatar Airways, Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority, and airport operator Matar. The women allege "unlawful physical contact" and false imprisonment, aiming for justice for the ordeal they endured alongside similar searches affecting UK and New Zealand travellers. All parties involved originally pushed for the case to be dismissed. In April 2024, Justice John Halley ruled against Qatar Airways' liability under the Montreal Convention. He argued that the airline's staff couldn't have influenced Qatari police actions or the examinations conducted onsite. While the case against Qatar's aviation regulator was dismissed due to immunity from foreign prosecution, avenues remain open against Qatar Airways and Matar. Justices Angus Stewart, Debra Mortimer, and James Stellios underscored the necessity for trial-based deliberation, allowing the case to move forward. The women, whose UK and NZ counterparts aren't part of this suit, maintain their harrowing experience demands justice. Their lawyer, Damian Sturzaker, expressed relief at the decision, emphasising their deserved compensation and courtroom opportunities. The incident caused lasting repercussions, with accounts of immense distress. One woman recounted the ordeal as akin to being "raped," while another felt she was being kidnapped, highlighting the severe emotional aftermath, reported BBC. Despite a criminal charge that resulted in a suspended sentence for an airport official, the women view pursuing this legal route as essential because they believe Qatari authorities have taken insufficient action. They have called for a formal apology and changes to airport procedures to prevent repeat incidents. The case is now primed for trial in the Federal Court, spotlighting an indispensable pursuit for accountability and change. Crime Fugitive Caught After 12 Years on the Run for Brutal Robbery of Mother and Daughter

Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers have arrested a man wanted for over a decade in connection with a violent armed robbery that left a mother and daughter seriously injured. The suspect, identified as Chetmitr, was apprehended at a residence in Huai Aeng sub-district, Mueang Maha Sarakham District, after evading justice for more than 12 years. Officers from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD), under the Central Investigation Bureau, conducted the arrest following intelligence that the fugitive had secretly returned to visit his wife and was hiding in the area. The original incident took place in 2009, when Chetmitr and an accomplice allegedly broke into a remote farmhouse late at night, where a mother and her daughter were asleep. The assailants brutally beat the victims with wooden objects, targeting their heads and bodies, before robbing them of two gold necklaces (one weighing 2 baht and the other 1.5 baht) and 23,000 baht in cash. The attackers then fled the scene. Local police from Mueang Maha Sarakham Police Station responded, collecting forensic evidence and interviewing the victims. Chetmitr was later apprehended and granted bail but subsequently absconded. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Juvenile and Family Court of Maha Sarakham Province on 25 April 2013. Recently, investigators traced him back to the same area where the crime had occurred. Officers conducted surveillance on the residence until they spotted a man matching the suspect’s description. Upon confirming his identity, police moved in and made the arrest. Chetmitr was informed of the charges against him, including robbery and attempted murder and his legal rights before being taken into custody. The operation was carried out under the direction of Pol. Lt. Gen. Jiraphop Phuridej, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, with the coordination of Pol. Maj. Gen. Songklod Krerkkritya, Commander of the ATPD, and Pol. Col. Sarawut Jantawong, Superintendent of Sub-Division 3 of the ATPD. The arresting team was led by Pol. Lt. Col. Prawet Saengphrom and officers from the same unit. Chetmitr has been remanded to the Juvenile and Family Court of Maha Sarakham, who issued the original warrant, for further legal proceedings.
