Ambulance driver dies after Krabi crash

KRABI: -- One person died and six had to be taken to hospital just after midnight this morning (May 5), after a pick-up truck crossed the central reservation of a road in Krabi and crashed head-on into an ambulance.

At 12:10am police were notified of the crash, in front of the Klong Tom Vocational College on Petchkasem Rd.

They and rescue workers arrived at the scene to find the ambulance in the left lane with its front crushed.

The driver, Piyawat Dokput, 38, was stuck inside and had a head injury that was bleeding severely.

Rescue workers put him on a ventilator while they used the jaws of life to get him free. This took one hour, after which Mr Dokput was taken to Klong Tom Hospital.

He was later transferred to Krabi Hospital where he died shortly after arriving.

Two nurses, Sunantha Khayankarn and Patcharin Saktao, who were in the ambulance, were also injured and taken to KlongTom Hospital.

The driver of the pick-up Plobsak Pramownsook, 42, and his four passengers were slightly injured.

The passengers were taken to Klongtom Hospital, while police took Plobsak to the police station for questioning.

Police said that the ambulance had dropped off a patient in Trang and was heading back to Krabi.

When the ambulance reached the college the pick-up truck, coming in the opposite direction, swerved across the central reservation and crashed into it.

The impact was so violent that the engine of the pick-up truck was thrown out of the truck and was found in a bush at the side of the road.

Plobsak, who suffered only minor injuries, told police he was driving from Phuket to Klong Tom Tai, not far from the scene of the accident.

“It was raining hard and I suddenly spotted a broken down pick-up truck at the side of the road. I swerved to avoid it but lost control.”

Plobsak was charged with reckless driving causing death and injury.

Yes. I've noticed this pattern in Thai culture to blame anything else but not themselves. The road was wet, it was slippery, it was raining, there was a sharp curve, there was a road repairing ahead, the breaks failed and so on and so forth... never the fault of the driver.

Very sad for the dead driver. Just doing his job. Guess he said goodbye to his family before going to work. Sad for them.

This is noth peculiar to Thai culture.

Everybody on the planet tries to put the blame on something else other than themselves.
