Cambodian Imports Double During the First Quarter

Recommended Posts

Imports from Cambodia nearly doubled for the first quarter of 2015 compared to the same period last year. Cambodia reached $261 million in exports as part of an attempt to improve the economic ties between the two countries.

Data from the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh shows that exports from Thailand was up 96% at the end of March. This is up from $134 million during the same period in 2014.

Jiranan Wongmongkol, who is director of the Foreign Trade Promotion Office of the Thai Embassy stated that the improved economic activities between the two countries was a result of Thailand bolstering its cross-border trade with Cambodia.

The majority of the imports from Cambodia consist of used garments, agricultural products, fish, and recyclable material. Thailand’s exports to Cambodia were mostly petroleum, vehicles, fruits, construction, vegetables and material.

Trade between the two countries is expected to increase after the National Road 5 is complete and connects Pursat to the Thailand’s Trat province.

In 2014, trade volume between Thailand and Cambodia reached $5.1 billion, up 11% from the $4.6 billion in 2013.

The Thai government will host a trade fair from June 4-7 to further improve networking between local businesses in both Thailand and Cambodia.
