BPH Shrinking enlarged prostate

Featured Replies

Does anyone have experience of successfully shrinking an enlarged prostate via non-surgical means, and where the shrinkage was confirmed by ultrasound, DRE or some other method (not just – “the flow improved”).

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have first hand experience of this, rather than opinions based on web research or hearsay.

Would be great to know

  • the length of time for treatment
  • side-effects
  • effect on PSA count
  • before and after sizes
  • what the treatment was!

Thanks

My urologist in the US has put me on several prescription drugs to reduce the size of the prostrate with limited success. But the result is what matters, not what it looks like on an ultrasound

He says the only other option is surgically to reduce the size

So that is my story and I'm sticking to it

Thanks LM.

Did it take long?

Were there side effects?

What effect did it have on your PSA count if any?

Were you using the meds simultaneously or trying a new one if the old one was unsuccessful?

Does limited success mean the flow was slighlty improved?

Which meds would you recommend based on that experience (if any)?

Takes a couple of days to kick in

None, except Flomax (the most popular) eliminates any ejaculate

PSA count has always been the same, not matter what medication I was on

One RX at a time

I don't have a problem with flow, when I gotta go, I gotta go. My main problem is waking up in the middle of the night and having to get up to go to the toilet, which naturally disrupts my sleep cycle

To be perfectly honest with you, nothing is worth it, but my current Rx is Alfuzion, which seems to have minimal side effects. And stopping it definitely increases my night time visits to the toilet and is how I can answer question #1

I will not opt for the surgical option since my father did and it was not very successful. My milage may very but once it is done there is no going back, so the risk to rewards ratio is still too high for me

I know here that folks that a supplement called saw palmetto, and of course, i'm sure you cand 1/2 dozen concoctions and people claiming whatever http://www.prostatehealthreviews.org/.

my estimate is likely a waste of time, if you like cranberry juice, drink that for kicks, and maybe a little better GU health, otherwise, Uro MDs tell me: there are 2 pharma choices ; work on the symptoms or the cause. 2 drug families, the -zosins (alfa, tera, etc) keep the bladder emptying valve open longer, your bladder more fully empties, you then get less trips to toliet, and sometimes your drier, incontinence--wise (the terazosin can get two for 1 and will lower your BP, hence taken at night I guess is the reason); w/in the family some cause more probabilty of no ejaculation than others, so it's trial and error, in my experience, the more effective one for dryness are sadly also the ones that give that particular bad symptom, though, maybe could be a birth control strategy, never thought about it.

the 2nd family shrinks the prostate, start with 6 months expensive Avodart (works faster), then maintain on generic finesteride (forever) --the latter causing ED in a significant number of patients, hence all the ED meds in the world nowadays, I'm guessing.

after a while you have some risk of urinary retention, which can be serious, so; that's the long and short of it ...
