BANGKOK: -- THE CHIEF monk for Nakhon Ratchasima province has set up a 31-member committee to inspect the assets of Wat Ban Rai and its recently deceased abbot Luang Phor Khoon Parisuttho.

The temple is located in Dan Khun Thot district.

Phra Rajawimolmoli said yesterday that the panel - comprised of monks and laymen - would check all assets, including cash, records of financial donations, amulets as well as temple expenses and debts. While the assets are being checked, everything will be locked up to prevent theft.

The chief monk said the committee, chaired by his deputy Phra Rajasimaporn, would be helped by experts in checking and making detailed records of all the assets so an explanation can be provided to disciples and members of the public.

The panel will include provincial governor Thongchai Lue-adul as an adviser as well as provincial Buddhism Office director Banchayuth Nakmujalin, provincial culture officer Sompong Wiriyajaru, acting Wat Ban Rai abbot Phra Khru Pavana Prachanart and members of the Wat Ban Rai committee.

In related news, former Wat Ban Rai warden Thawat Reungrai revealed earlier that the temple had three main bank accounts: the late abbot's personal account into which donations were paid before being forwarded to charities, which now has Bt300,000; the "Banchee 90" account, which aimed to raise Bt100 million for His Majesty the King's charities, but now has Bt17 million; and the Luang Phor Khoon Musuem account containing Bt7 million.

Another account for the Luang Phor Khoon Foundation reportedly contained Bt47 million, the interest from which was spent on underprivileged children's education, meals and related charities, Thawat said.

Meanwhile, up to 100,000 people are expected to flock daily to Khon Kaen University (KKU)'s Golden Jubilee Hall to pay their respects to Luang Phor Khoon, whose body is on display in a glass casket, KKU Faculty of Medicine dean Chanchai Panthongwiriyakul said.

Donations raised over Sunday and Monday have gone beyond Bt3.74 million.

Members of the public have until Saturday to bid their final farewell to the late monk and attend the Abhidhamma prayers.
