BANGKOK: -- Prachasongkroh community residents in Bangkok this morning gathered at Government House calling for the prime minister to review the "Orange Line" project after learning of a plan to reroute the rail line that will cut into their communities.

Prateep Nilwan, leader of the residential communities which comprise Soi Mae Niew, and Din Daeng, said all residents who came to petition the prime minister would be affected by the Orange Line if it is rerouted.

The rail line is from Taling Chan to Minburi.

He said the earlier route approved by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) board of directors had avoided their communities.

The route bypasses Prachasongkroh and uses Rama 9 road instead, he said.

Besides, the route had been tabled for public hearing and won support as it would avoid impact on residential communities and could save up to two billion baht in construction cost.

Design of the route had also been completed.

But he said now there is a relocation of the train station from its original site at BMA Office 2 to the middle of Mae Niew community or Prachasongkroh 21 community.

This change was against the master plan of the project proposes avoidance of densely populated communities.

He said the rerouting would mean extra cost for compensation in expropriations of vast areas of land.

He questioned the rerouting, instead, benefits the private business as a large piece of vacant land behind the Esplanade Shopping Plaza earlier planned for the Orange Line to cut through is exempted and the line will run parallel to the boundary of the large piece of empty land.

Such rerouting will be an obvious windfall for landlords, he said.

He said all community residents decided to petition the prime minister and the transport minister urging them to review the rerouting and make it the least impact on communities.
