Thailand and Cambodia to hold talks on preventing illegal logging

UBON RATCHATHANI, 26 May 2015 (NNT) – Ubon Ratchathani Province is to confer with Cambodian provinces to set up measures against illegal tree logging along their border.

A conference between Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani Province, and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey Provinces is set to take place on 4th-5th June 2015 in Ubon Ratchathani, regarding the instigation of measures against the illegal felling of Siamese Rosewood trees along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Ubon Ratchathani Vice Governor Kanchat Tansatien, yesterday chaired a preparatory meeting to organize the conference between countries.

The meeting on 5th June will consist of a discussion on preventive measures against illegal tree felling, and the establishment of a national joint committee and a provincial joint subcommittee between Thailand and Cambodia, to aid the efficiency of the cooperative action on illegal logging.

Both sides have agreed to the cooperation of all sectors to prevent the illegal felling of Siamese Rosewood trees, including an exchange of information regarding individuals, groups, and the activities of wood traders in the border area, as well as the notification of the public in both countries on penalties according to the law in each country.

For the upcoming meeting, Ubon Ratchathani Province has appointed related agencies to organize the meeting and facilitate the deliberations, in an attempt to ensure the meeting succeeds in reaching effective conclusions.

Ubon Ratchathani Province previously held a meeting with Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province at the Poi Pet Immigration Office on 8th May 2015, attended by officials from both provinces.

This is the same problem as occurs in every other illegal practice here. Those most responsible are the ones that turn a blind eye to this trade for a fee of course. Government employees.
