Deputy PM Yongyuth disagrees with the use of S44 to deal with liquor sale near campuses

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yutthawong has brushed aside a suggestion by several educational administrators that Section 44 be invoked to deal with the sale of alcoholic drinks at venues in close vicinity to campuses.

He pointed out that there is already a law to deal with the problem but it is yet to be clearly defined how close liquor selling shops they are to educational institutes that they are banned from selling liquor to students.

Regulating pubs or venues selling alcoholic drinks which are located around colleges is more complicated than regulating pavement vendors which can be done immediately, said Mr Yongyuth.

To begin with, he said that officials concerned must strictly enforce the existing law. Section 44, he added, should be invoked only when necessary otherwise people would not be afraid of the special law.

The government's frequent use of Article 44 borders on fascism.

While purporting to follow a roadmap to democracy, fascism seems to take greater precedent in Junta's rule of the nation.

Someone has a bit of common sense.

One way to upset the university students is to deprive them of their access to alcohol.

Students survive on Mama Noodles, som tam and beer.

The Deputy PM is correct. The full force of S44 should only be used when there is a need to instill fear in the citizens.

You can not stop people from selling or stop students from buying booze. There is no real way to prevent this. Even though there are laws - there is no enforcement of them

Why? Ccared to upset the real greedy people controlling the country such as the Singha and Beer Chang families? Alcohol manufacturing companies in thailand should be taxed heavily and these familes and their companies should be prevented from owning land and other businesses in thailand!

This argument doesn't make sense. They are already taxed to the gills. The land argument is silly too. Any business should be allowed to expand to other fields.

What they need to do is remove the archaic regulations that keep these two breweries as the only game in Thailand, but that has nothing to do with keeping students from drinking liquor.
