PM says law must be applied step by step against pubs near campuses

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said Friday that shops or pubs that sell liquor which are located around campuses should be given some time to adjust themselves to abide by the law.

He pointed out that law enforcement had been lax for a long time and, out of a sudden, there was a demand for a crackdown on these establishments or that they were to close down their businesses immediately despite the fact that they had made substantial investments in their businesses.

The above comment of the prime minister was in response to recent calls by university administrators and students that shops and pubs that sell liquor should not be located within 500 metre radius from their campuses.

“Everything needs time for adjustments to the changes,” said the prime minister, adding that he didn’t want to use the special powers vested by Section 44 to deal with this problem.

He suggested authorities concerned to take a look at the existing laws or regulations regarding liquor selling near universities to find out how far these establishments have to be away from the campuses.

If they are within the off-limits zone, they should first be given a warning and given a certain period of time to follow the law, he said, adding that, in this case, the law must be applied step by step from lenient to heavy.

There are many laws here but no enforcement. Is this just another way to extort money from people who run a business for years. But most of all none of these paper laws would keep a single student from drinking beer or liquor whenever he wants to.

If you live close to a school you have to go 500 m to legally buy beer? Better let the vendors check the IDs of the buyer- you are under age? Have a coke.

“Everything needs time for adjustments to the changes,”

It begs the question why in this case restraint of law enforcement must be exercised while it was not in the case of national forest, beach, and public thoroughfare encroachments. In all those cases the military just simply cleared people out regardless of their dependence on rather low income from those encroachments.

Under Prayut's regime equality under the law seems elusive and ill-defined. And yet he purports himself to be the champion of equality.

You must look at this logically. If a students wants a drink he must walk 500 m. That means it will be easier for rival gangs from other schools to follow and injure them in their way home from having a beer.

Since this law has been apparently in effect from how this article reads. The PM is not trying to give the establishments time to adjust but us really giving the police who allowed this illegal action time to find another source of extortion money or bribe money. We would not want a sudden loss of income from a police unit near the universities! They might get angry and start pee testing those young pretty girls on the street like they did to foreigners on soi cowboy.

What is it with the obsession with university students and having some form of sexual encounters and getting drunk. It is part of the whole experence. Growing up etc.

Why not concentrate on real issues, after all the university students are the leaders of tomorrow, given the chance.

He doesn't need to.

Enforce the law. It's been clear for some time now what the law is.

It was ignored and now the consequences should follow.

First they must find out if any " connected " people own them and allow time to

alter paperwork !

Exactly. These are liquor revenue streams that have been bought and paid for, mostly by cops or given by cops to family members and mia noi's. Can't have that situation change in a sudden rush to enforce some nonsense, politically correct legislation.

By the same token, if the trauma of rushing some city ordinance through to clear this half-kilometer of pious sobriety around schools is too terrible to think about, whatever possessed him* when he rushed to topple a whole sitting government and subjugate an entire nation.... oh, never mind.

* Clue: They own a whole helluva lot more than a few liquor stores around campuses.
