SONGKHLA: -- Over 200 inmates went on rampage burning prison property, beddings, smashing glass windows, and throwing stones and bricks at prison wardens at Songkhla provincial prison.

A dozen of wardens and two inmates were injured and were admitted to Songkhla hospital.

Primary investigation revealed that the inmates turned violent to protest prison action in narcotic checks in their living quarter, and overcrowding.

They said the living quarter was for 150 persons to live, but now it was added to over 200, thus causing it to overcrowded.

By late this afternoon, hundreds of police, soldiers were still keeping guard outside the detention area where smokes from burning is still visible.

Fire trucks arrived but still could not enter the fire scene as hundreds of inmates were still protesting and throwing rocks, sticks at authorities trying to come closer.

But Songkhla governor Narong Charoenkul and troop commander were holding meeting in the bid to end the riot before night falls.

200 does seem rather a lot, particularly if they were not previously acquainted. On a more serious note, rocks and bricks are being thrown! Why have prison inmates got access to rocks and stones?

'Have a meeting' that solves everything! It has become quite clear tome that Thailand has absorbed a lot from the west. Mainly the need to call a meeting

and spen several weeks doing S.F.A

Smashed up the walls/pathways?

Riot at Songkhla prison is under control with nine injured

SONGKHLA: -- Authorities have managed to take control of Songkhla provincial prison following a riot by about 200 prisoners in the morning which left one warder and eight prisoners slightly injured and two buildings gutted.

Led by Lt-Gen Prakarn Cholayuth, commander of the 4th Army Region, and Mr Ruangsak Suwaree, deputy director-general of Corrections Department, the authorities agreed to look into the problem of overcrowding as demanded by the protesting prisoners.

Relatives of some of the prisoners were also escorted into the prison to witness with their own eyes that no prisoners were killed during the riot as speculated.

The prison in Songkhla is housing about 2,500 prisoners, including 1,000 serious offenders.

About 200 prisoners rioted this morning to protest against overcrowding problem in the prison and the introduction of a new order banning the use of plastic bags in prison which were suspected to be used to wrap up forbidden items such as mobile phones and drugs.

The protesting prisoners went on rampage setting fire to two buildings, throwing missiles at glass windows and attacking wardens prompting the warder to call in police and army troops to quell the rioters.

The building for relatives to visit prisoners and another building which houses the learning centre were burned down.

Set them free.

Why ?

Because more than half of them are in there because of poor representation of crap lawyers.

1 third were fit up for a crime they did not commit, and the rest are in for smoking pot or saying the wrong thing on a Facebook page.

Let them free.

Western standard room for 20, Thai standard 150, stuffed to 200. What do they expect. Release

all those convicted of drug use/minor trafficking to support there habits, with a Kings Pardon.

Would certainly send an 'interesting' message to prisoners in other institutions around the country, especially the ones who miss the nuances of your argument (which I actually agree with). Have a riot => get set free.

Awww, the poor prisoners don't like it in prison. The bleeding hearts say set them free because it is overcrowded. Or you could shoot a couple of dozen rioters and solve the problem that way.

Prisons are a re place to keep the mentally deficient (also the mentally ill, unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference) away from the more normal people. A side benefit is it stops them from breeding. Anybody who wants to argue they aren't morons should re-read the OP - the part about which 2 buildings were burnt down.

I remember a prison breakout some years ago in Thailand. The prisoners were armed. They surrendered, threw down their weapons, went back into the prison and they were all shot dead, because they 'attacked the guards. This was live on TV.

Dozens of wardens?????? I thought there was only one warden and all the others were guards?

This is Thailand. It might just have dozens of wardens! We'll know when 6 or 7 get moved to inactive posts.

Well they're not stupid are they, why burn down your own patch - if you did, you would be then crowded into remaining accommodation increasing the overcrowding further.

My apologies, it was in the second news item, post #9. Burning the visitors' centre is indeed stupid, that is the source of most of the quality food that prisoners receive. Whether burning the school where you might possibly learn a trade for use on your release is smart, I will leave up to you.

I wouldn't think there was too much smart either shown / used / capable of being used in the whole exercise.

Is your motive to stir the pot, to incite an angry reply?

Let's look at your comment, Prisons are a place to keep the mentally deficient (also the mentally ill, unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference) away from the more normal people. You are wrong, as you usually are. I'm gong to leave that ignorant statement there as it sums you up quite nicely. Prisons are not intended for the mentally ill. It is not a place for people who have schizophrenia, addiction induced hallucinations or behaviours, dementia etc. You have no understanding of mental illness, and I will be surprised if you have much of an education whether formal or self taught.

It stops them from breeding? Wow. You really are a piece of work. You are filled with a lot of anger and hate and it is demonstrated in each and every one of your posts.

If they are all Felons, shoot one or two with Buck Shot/Rock Salt and the rest will settle down, if not keep it up until you get their attention.

Inmate killed, 13 injured in riot at Songkhla Prison
The Nation

SONGKHLA: -- AN INMATE was killed and 13 others injured, including five guards, when a riot erupted at Songkhla Prison yesterday. About 200 inmates were reportedly angry about crowded conditions and strict rules for searches for drugs and cell-phones.

The riot erupted at 8am and ended in the afternoon, after officials agreed to consider the inmates' demand which included cell improvement and a call for Songkhla governor to shift prison chief Piratpon Wongwet, the latter of which officials claimed to be undoable.

Corrections Department chief Wittaya Suriyawong made an emergency trip to Songkhla to inspect the riot-hit 2,500-inmate prison. He said he ordered the facility to be closed and prohibit visitors.

Fourth Army Region chief Lt Gen Prakan Cholayut, who went to control the crisis along with Corrections Department deputy chief Reungsak Suwari, said inmates burned mattresses and a visitor building in the compound as well as metal gates between Zone 1, 2 and 3. During the riot, 100 relatives of inmates protested in front of the jail - after hearing many inmates had died and been injured. Police said the convict who died was Chaiwut Saeheng.
