By Coconuts Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Twelve national reformers of the junta-appointed National Reform Council have a novel solution to Thailand’s gambling problem: legalise it.

A frequent target of the kingdom’s seasonal crackdowns, gambling is widespread and legalizing and regulating it would be a boon to the Thai economy.
“Casinos should be legalised for the sake of our country,” Col. Arnan Watcharothai said at a news conference yesterday.

Saying gambling could help the country’s economic slowdown, the group cited the fact Thailand’s neighbours have casinos serving many customers daily.

Ask Atlantic City, NJ, USA how that worked out for them. sad.png

If people want to gamble just let them !

Sort of free will and only hurts the one to blame [the gambler] - why does everything need to be controlled and regulated ?

Let the people decide for themselves.

Stop treating people like small kids !

How did it work out? I am genuinely interested.

Gambling is a spiral to the bottom. Thai's don' t have much money now and you want them to spent more in a casino own by the mafia? The family situation and education system needs help not poker or black-jack. Bleed the poor as usual.

Just another pipeline to channel corruption and money laundering.....so much of that goes on beyond the borders so I guess Thai wants a piece of the action

I Issan where I lived for many years they said ' If you report a murder a cop will turn up sometime but report a Card school and a van load of the boys in brown arrive within minutes!

In other news, said reformers seem to have stumbled upon perfect solutions for the drugs and weapon problems.

They are still working on the prostitution problem, but are positive on finding a good solution in that problem area as well.

Yeah yeah and with all the anti gambling laws imposed everything is peachy perfect.

Gamblers don't gamble because it's against the law and drug users don't use drugs for the same reason.

lmao

Just regulate the <deleted>

Wont make any difference to rank and file gambling for only the rich can afford casinos.

What it would do is bring in more tax, presuming they are taxed, and provide a great conduit for money laundering.

Actually, in Las Vegas, they have penny and nickle slot machines. They have the WORST odds.

If they legalize Casinos in Thailand, it will capture a lot of the TVF poster money.

You know, people bad at math (logic, history, economics, etc)

actually they dont need a casino at all, in my village they play with the bol and dice, with seeds (ki or kou), cards, any games on tv, specially football, saturday and sunday with the thai boxing.. the rooster fighting...and perhaps other kind of games that i dont even know..i mean a casino is not going to make it worse as it is allready....people love gambling making money or loosing too...it is all prohibited by law.... and they keep gambling because it is imposible for the police to handle that thing , or they should put 50% of the men population in jail....or control every house every day.it is a wast of time...education at school, on tv to prevent people to get games addict would be a better solution than prohibition, in my modest opinion

I've worked before in the gaming industry and seen many, many sad sights. IMHO the average Thai mentality and gambling industry are not a good combination. I really don't want to think about the implications at the grass roots level of Thai society where luck IS factored in most decisions. Hell. many people I know in the villages have enough losses on a friendly game of bingo with their neighbors.

A wise lady I know always says "better your house burns down than someone in your family gambles, at least you still have the land".

Economy[edit]

As of September 2014, the greater Atlantic City area has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country at 13.8%, out of labor force of around 141,000.[60]

Gambling revenue can help Thailand and they can prevent locals by gambling by imposing a hefty entrance fee like they do in Singapore. But Thailand can't even manage a simple lottery system, they should not even attempt a casino.

I can name some others:

Banks, the european union, the US ... pretty much all countries on this planet.

Insanity can NOT be regulated by laws, only by wisdom !!!
