BANGKOK: -- OFFICIALS from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), impressed by the flood stimulation software in Rotterdam, want to adapt similar system here.

But Bangkok's system to monitor and stop flooding will still need an upgrade and hardware development before such modern software can be applied, a senior official said.

BMA deputy permanent secretary Adisak Khantee reported yesterday on the result of Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra's June 9-11 visit to the National Research Institute on Water, Subsoil, and Infrastructure at Deltares in the Netherlands.

He said Sukhumbhand was interested in the Dutch city's use of "Circle" flood forecasting and infrastructure impact assessment software.

He said the Circle software predicted two flood scenarios at 25cm-deep and 50cm-deep levels during a storm surge and possible impacts to infrastructure such as electricity, water supply, drainage or hospitals. It allowed each agency's representatives to better prepare for a disaster and rehabilitation work.

How about they eye tons of garbage thrown into the klongs everyday? Don't need Dutch software to make sure Water Dept is doing their job by keeping the pumps running.

I have no doubt they do fancy it, no doubt at all....

Whether it works or not, or is suitable to BKK situation is completely irrelevant.

Great idea, great state of the art software that will churn out all sorts of data including advance warning of major problems.

Only problem is will anybody respond in a timely fashion?

Just waiting for the 20 billion funds request from the BMA........

So are they going to import one Dutch boy to stick his finger in BKK klongs? or better yet,

find a way to get rid of mattresses and household furniture from blocking the pipes?

Just another PR Gag, and this year it ain't gonna be a funny one

flood stimulation software

I really (REALLY) hope that this is a typo cheesy.gif

Sounds like a good excuse to skim some money.

With a Dutch company that is bound by law against corruption. Possibly.. but unlikely. Maybe on the Thai parts or stuff bought from Thais.

And in the mean time it's raining like hell in Bangkok .....

lets hope they do a little dd this time, the bomb detector stuff is hilarious as is rusting aircraft carrier with no suitable aircraft

The difference is regardless of any hardware and software issues, the Dutch authorities don't have to kowtow to a Royal Irrigation Department and their arcane and senseless ideas.

Spend money on software to watch flooding instead of spending money on fixing the causes of the flooding.

Thai logic at its best.

Just up the road from me this past Friday about noon'ish a water line was broken. Phoned the water dept/tesaban. No answer. No one in the office at all. They had all gone home for the day.

The water ran all through the weekend and as of yesterday was still creating a nice little stream.

TBS this is not a flood but it will be the same people - or people like them - that will be taking care of that as well.

But Bangkok's system to monitor and stop flooding will still need an upgrade and hardware development before such modern software can be applied, a senior official said.

Still running Windows XP then.
