Mortar Shell found by street refuse collector in East Pattaya



PATTAYA: -- On Sunday Morning the Police EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Unit was alerted to the discovery of a Mortar Shell by a street refuse collector in East Pattaya.

An EOD officer met with Khun Suan aged 65, who found the 14kg shell as he checked dumped refuse behind the SP 4 Village in the Nong Pla Lai area. Without any fear that the shell could be live, he took the shell to his home nearby and first alerted the Village Chief who in-turn called the Police.

More likely an old 105mm artillery shell. They fired projectiles in the 12-15kg range (depending on shell type). You can still see the driving band at the base of the shell, which is "squared off". Mortar shells taper to a slender fin assembly at the base.

At least it was a P.street collector that found it . Think of the headline if a jetski operator had found it. " Shell found on beach "

Good that no one was hurt.

Certainly not a mortar, could be a RTN practise round fished up by a fisherman, some of the Islands have been used as target practice by the Navy and Air Force and the seas around them are littered with spent ordnance, thankfully most have blue bands on them, may be a translation issue, it is filled with mortar (cement).

Luckily a nearby street vendor offered the use if her recently calibrated weighing scale to confirm the weight of the projectile.......
