FPO says MERS situation in Thailand is under control

BANGKOK, 23 June 2015 (NNT)-The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) has expressed the view that Thailand will be able to prevent an outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) in this country.

The FPO claims that the ability to control the deadly disease is higher now compared to the Sars epidemic in 2002, as essential information is shared faster worldwide.

Prevention measures are implemented more quickly and more effectively at present. All international airports in Thailand have checkpoints where arriving passengers from Middle Eastern nations and South Korea can be checked for any signs of sickness.

The Ministry of Public Health has also established quarantine and special care systems for those infected with Mers, following the World Health Organization (WHO)’s advice.

The WHO has also praised Thailand for its excellent measures to deal with the infection risk. No country has issued a travel advisory against coming to Thailand, like Hong Kong has in relation to South Korea.

Thai economy unaffected by MERS
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Fiscal Policy Office director-general Krisda Chinavicharana insisted Tuesday that the Thai economy has not yet been affected by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, reflecting through the number of tourist arrivals.

He said that during June 18-21, tourist arrivals through Suvarnabhumi Airport increased by 57.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, tour companies have not reported any cancellation.

The office will closely monitor the situation, he said. Hotels, restaurants, airlines and shopping malls would be the first to feel the impacts, if any, he said. History shows that the Thai economy resurrected 2-5 months after an outbreak.

He noted that the situation remains under control thanks to the timely release of information to the public and proper preventive measures, which helped lessen the severity of the disease compared to the SARS outbreak in 2006.

"2 Thai Hospitals Refuse to Admit Suspected MERS Patients: Officials" facepalm.gif

FPO says MERS situation in Thailand is under control.

Lets hope this is not another case of "famous last words"

I was at our local hospital today. They had MERS signs everywhere. The signs, in Thai, basically said: You may have MERS if you have these symptoms: Fever, cough, running nose, sore throat - and I'm thinking to myself, based on those symptoms you probably have a cold.

So, just pointing out the obvious as usual - why the hype? God only knows that there are diseases galore that actually kill hundreds to thousands of people a year, Jing Jing, like for real (dengue, malaria, liver flukes, etc) - but both the government and news media pick up the ball and start a fear mongering campaign on an almost yearly basis: MERS, SARS, H1N1, blah, blah, blah..... Why? To take everyone attention off the things that actually are killing people and causing serious carnage in Thailand (like road accidents?). <head shake>

Fiscal Policy Office??? Why are they commentig?

Because, as with everything here, it's all about the money.

How can anyone be completely sure it's under control if 9 people who were in contact with the Omani haven't been found and screened ?

Well, if the PM can't dictate to the disease, the FPO can. I assume they are aware that nine contacts of the Omani MERS tourist have yet to be located?
