I suggest you post that inquery in the Thailand travel forum and be more specific about what you mean by a "decent area" as one person's definition may not be the same as another's....

am curious about how old you are to have had both done, and still be doing competitive cycling.

Lost

I would take things slowly on the bike. I've had both TKR and am a touring cyclist. The first knee has held up just fine but the scond one done about 18mos ago has failed for no apparent reason. No infection, no problem with alignment etc. The only thing the docs can come with is I started back touring too soon. The failure rate is about 2% much of which is due to unknown reasons.

I am now 6 weeks post revision surgery and am about to begin cycling about 5 -10kms. Revision surgey is much more involved and more painful which could be due to the much stronger implant which has a 6" stem into both thigh a lower leg bones. I've got about 120deg of movement in the knee now.

I would give the new knee more healing time before tackling the other knee.

I am 70 y/o and do not do competitive cycling. I cycle daily and also tour. My last tour (last month) was a 3 1/2 week ride from Udon Thani to the Cambodian border area to visit a number of historical sites. I returned after making it as far as the Hindu temple - Preah Vihear on the Thai/Cambodian border. I am not a speed rider and only average about 17kph and stop often but am more than capable of doing 120kms in a day when fully loaded.

for everyone that has had the total knee/partial/mako:

am curious how you managed the pain, seems to me, the 1st knee is the hardest because, everything is new, and narcotics are unpredicable in how they are handled.

also, were you told to take antibiotics before teeth cleanings for 2 years ?

when did you feel comfortable that infection risk had passed ?
