Why is Chiang Mai so hot right now? Seriously..

A serious question. Does anybody have a good understanding of the current weather pattern right now and would they care to explain it..

All the locals I talk to seem to say it's not that normal...

I understand the rain hasn't come yet.....but is there any other explanation I might no know about...

Any experienced weather watchers out there care to comment....?

Have you heard the term "climate change"? Not just Thailand either. May was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth. And the UK just had its hottest day in 160 years of record keeping.

It's not just CM it's the entire region, heat related deaths this year in India were substantial, we're told it's an El Nino year. FWIW winds continue to come from the SW which is good but alas, very little rain outside of Muang.

Wait a short while and all will likely change, July simply HAS to be wetter and cooler. (you heard it here first)

Nah, it's always this hot, wait until August, that will be hotter than hell.

In the rainy season between showers, I always get sunburn, if I'm not careful.

Normally the rain cools things down a bit, but it's late this year, not a lot, just a little late.

Things are not helped by about 10sq km of stinking hot concrete, buildings, pavement and highways.

I can see rain in the hills to the east, south and north. They all seem to skirt around the city. Maybe rain clouds don't like thermal updrafts.

just a thought.

We see the rain clouds daily come from the Mae Sa valley and down towards us but they rarely release much at all. CM Muang on the other hand, according to my favored car wash owner in Watkate, has been deluged and business is slack, as a result. Ergo, the hot concrete theory is flawed.

I wonder if the guy with a beard, wearing long robes and standing on the corner carrying a sign that reads "The End of the World is Nigh!" might be on to something...

(No, I actually do NOT believe the end of the World is nigh. I think it actually ended several years ago, and what we're seeing now, what with all the earthquakes, floods, droughts, heat waves, etc., etc., is the wind-down. :) )

When are people going to wake up and realize global warming is real and it means it is going to get hotter.

You've probably never noticed, but July and August are always the hottest months if you live anywhere in the northern hemisphere.

It's to do with the earth orbiting the sun apparently.

April and May seem a lot hotter to me here. After that, the rain seems to cool things off. This year is hotter than normal, but Hot Season was much worse.

I will be considered a spoilsport, but there is nothing but speculation above. Not one fact plus some real factual errors. Finding the facts is not difficult, but I'll leave you to it. Start by googling "Chiang Mai Climograph;" then compare with the official daily record of temperature and precipitation within a reasonable time frame. Sorry, I am too lazy this evening to give you the url.

Maybe OP's friends are just having hot flashes! What IS going on, apparently, is less than aveage rainfall over a fairly extended period leading to some serious problems with water reserves in Northern and Central Thailand.

Otherwise, I am glad to share the casual fun. After several years of fun here, I think that this year is not far off the average (except precipitation). We did have some scorchers a few weeks back, as UG has mentioned, that seemed late for the season, but in recent weeks the usual progressive seasonal drop in temperatures is clearly apparent.

Now, whatever the case, pray for rain --- much more of it!

By the way, "Earth warming" does not mean that every place gets hotter.

Now, let's get back to the important stuff like the survival of Promenada, when the Immigration office will move, and 90-day reporting on-line! biggrin.png

Even the phony baloney "scientists" who know nothing except how to quote each other to sound like experts had to start calling it "climate change".

The climate has always fluctuated and always will. 160 years of records is a laughably short time for anyone to use to pretend he is proving something.

These "scientists" make phony claims in that they simply have no records as to what things were like 200 years ago before all of the man made issues, much less 500 or 10,000 or 1 million years ago.

Their claims about knowing anything "scientifically" would be laughable if they weren't such a fraud. It might have been hotter one summer 500 or 10,000 years ago and we would have no clue about it. They are speculating and shouldn't call it science.

That's false.

March, April, and May are historically the hottest months in Chiang Mai. (http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=72384&cityname=Chiang-Mai-Thailand)

It's August and September in Monterey, CA, USA. (http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=19427&cityname=Monterey-California-United-States-of-America)

In the Philippines, also March - May.

I guess global warming is some thing no one wants to believe. Well the Thai Visa experts don't any how. As the one poster said the scientist's are phonies who know nothing. Very few scientist deny it any more. Even Governments believe it and are making pretend attempts to do as little as they can to slow it down but still people think it is just because it is the hot season.

Look at the long range forecast. The weather has been changing ever since before life on the planet. It is now in one of it's warming trends. Could be a change that will last thousands of years.

As one poster so accurately pointed out not every place has felt it. How ever give them 50 years and they will feel it. It is not an overnight occurrence it has been happening a few years now and will continue for more years than any of the posters here will live.

On the other hand and I have no real knowledge of it but it sees like the humidity here in Chiang Mai is getting lower.

Simply unbelievable.

It doesn't apply to Chiang Mai in the same way though. April/May and some days in March are always the hottest. July and August can be a relief after the hot season. Some nights can feel quite cool after the rain.

Gosh! You seem to know so much more! By the way, are you resident in Chiang Mai? You don't seem familiar! Cruising? Got a lot of time on your hands? rolleyes.gif

In 2014, in 10 of 12 months Thailand experienced above normal mean temperature anomalies. This mirrors a similar phenomenon globally. Anomalies at both the hot and cold ends of the spectrum.

I realise that the graph I reference does not address CM specifically, nor does it address 2015 specifically, but I would bet that with a bit more effort I could find data supporting generally increasing CM temps. BTW, I found nothing germane at "Chiang Mai Climograph". Did I miss something?

Yes you have no knowledge. Would you think humidty goes up when there is no significant rain and with an open sky?
